Dawson Anders Qualifies for US Amateur
7.15.19 | Men's Golf
BLUE BELL, Pa. - Temple University rising junior Dawson Anders became the first Owl golfer to qualify for the US Amateur in five years when he shot a six-under 138 at the 6,939-yard, par-72 Cedarbrook Country Club Monday.
Anders can look to Temple assistant coach Matt Teesdale for advice on how to play at the US Amateur.  Teesdale and teammate Brandon Matthews earned spots in the 2014 US Amateur with Teesdale advancing to match play.
Coming off a 12th place showing at the four-day Eastern Amateur (July 11-14), Anders carded rounds of 70 and 68, including three-under on his final nine holes to earn one of the two qualifying spots in the field of 71 players.
The Telford, Pa. native made 11 birdies over the 36 holes, including seven on his final round.  He edged Saucon Valley Country Club's Matt Mattare (-5) by one stroke and was two shots behind the leader, Wake Forest redshirt senior Kyle Sterbinsky (-8), whose second round 63 tied former Owl great Brandon Matthews' course record.Â
"I'm trying to just go out there and go low, not think about what could happen," Anders, a member at Indian Valley Country Club, told GAPgolf.org. "I just focus on hitting good shots and that's why I've been able to go low lately."
Anders' will be playing one of the top courses in the country for the first time as the US Amateur is being held at Pinehurst Country Club (Aug. 12-18).
"It will be cool to see the course and get to play with some of the best amateurs," Anders said.
Former Owls Matthew Crescenzo (144), Erik Reisner (150), as well as current TU golfers Buddy Hansen (154), Conor McGrath (155), Liam McGrath (156) were among the field of qualifiers.
