Temple Rowing's Julia Rorer Promoted to Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

7.18.19 | Women's Rowing

PHILADELPHIA -- Julia Rorer was promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Temple women's rowing program, announced by head coach Rebecca Grzybowski on Thursday. Rorer has spent the last three seasons as a graduate assistant with the program.

"Julia is a proud owner of two Temple degrees - she's truly Philly grown and Temple made," noted Grzybowski. "Her institutional knowledge, her first-hand experience with the team, her proven organizational skills and abilities, and her tenacious work ethic and drive, made her a standout candidate. She has made a significant impact on our program during her time as graduate assistant - going far above and beyond in so many ways.

I couldn't be more happy to keep Julia at Temple in an expanded, full-time capacity and I can't wait to see the impact she will continue to make, specifically as she leads the pursuit to bring the best rowing talent in the world to North Broad Street."

A certified USRowing Level III coach, Rorer has experience at both the collegiate and club rowing levels. In three seasons with the Owls, she has seen Temple win its first ever women's and overall point trophies at the Dad Vail Regatta (2019) as well as tie its best finish at the American Athletic Conference Championships (2018).

"I'm really excited to have the opportunity to stay at Temple and continue to help in building the program to the best it can be," said Rorer. "I'm looking forward to finding future Temple talent that can help elevate the program!"

Rorer spent her first two seasons with Temple coaching the novices, before switching to the third varsity eight boat for the 2018-19 season. Most recently, her crew won gold medals at both the AAC Championships and the Dad Vail in 2019.

Rorer has coached the Olympic Development Program for the Mid Atlantic Region and has done extensive work with recruiting. She pioneered Temple's international recruitment program and the team will already feature a pair of international recruits for the 2019-20 season.

Prior to coming to Temple, she served as an assistant coach at Rutgers University, working with the novice program. Rorer's novice crew took bronze at the 2016 Murphy Cup, and also advanced to the grand finals competing in the 3V category at the 2016 Eastern Sprints.

While at Rutgers, she was also responsible for organizing travel, gear, purchasing requests, boat repairs and many other administrative areas. Additionally, Rorer administered the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Rowing Program, organizing and coaching their Inaugural Fall Head Race (Fall 2015)

Rorer spent two years as the head women's rowing coach at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia. She led the team to numerous wins in 2014, including a V4x Gold at the Steve Neczypor Memorial Regatta, a JV2x Gold at the Cooper Cup and a JV 2x Gold at the Philadelphia City Championships.

In 2012, Rorer taught masters and novice technique at the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club and served as the assistant varsity and JV rowing coach at The Agnes Irwin School. Her prior head coaching experience includes working as the head novice rowing coach for the men's and women's team at Moorestown Rowing Club in 2011 and 2010, respectively.

Rorer began her career as a rowing coach in 2007, when she worked as a volunteer assistant at Chestnut Hill Academy. Rorer earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 2011 from Temple University, where she studied Elementary and Early Childhood Education.

She rowed all four years of her high school career at Springside School and competed for a year at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., before having her career cut short due to a shoulder injury.

Rorer has since returned to the water, competing as a masters rower as a member of The University Barge Club on Boathouse Row in Philadelphia.
