Gebert, Hennessy Named AAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year

7.9.19 | Football, Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA -- Temple student-athletes Maddie Gebert and Matt Hennessy have been named the American Athletic Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year for women's lacrosse and football, respectively, announced AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards are given to a student-athlete in each American Athletic Conference-sponsored sport based on academic credentials and athletic accolades and performances.  To be eligible, student-athletes must have attained a minimum of senior academic standing. The final selections are made by the conference's Faculty Athletic Representatives. Each Scholar-Athlete of the Year recipient receives a $2,000 postgraduate scholarship.

Gebert, a supply chain management major with a 3.63 GPA, earned American Athletic Conference First Team honors and Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area accolades as a junior in 2019.  She led the Owls with 40 goals, helping them reach the first-ever AAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a 3-2 league record, and was a two-time AAC Attacker of the Week. The Pottstown, Pa. native had seven hat tricks, including a season high-tying five goals in the Owls' AAC Tournament quarterfinal game. Notably, Gebert was diagnosed with epilepsy in high school and began sharing her story about dealing with the disease during the 2018-19 academic year.

Hennessy, who earned a degree in finance in just three years with a 3.69 GPA, is a two-year starter at center and has been on the Rimington Award Watch List each season. The unquestioned leader for a strong group of young offensive linemen has started all 23 games that he played. The Bardonia, N.Y. native was the highest graded center in FBS football in 2018 for those playing at least 475 snaps, allowing zero sacks, zero QB hits and just two hurries in 738 snaps.  An annual Athletic Director's Honor Roll student, Hennessy earned Temple's Owl Club Academic Award in 2019.  Has also has participated in two week-long trips - to Japan in 2018 and Rome in 2019 – as part of Temple's STHM (Sport, Tourism, and Hospitality Management) program.
