Borger and Fernandes Earn Philly Soccer Six Weekly Honors
9.16.19 | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – Two Owls earned weekly nods from the Philly Soccer Six after a dominating 3-0 victory over Lafayette Friday night. Senior captain Lukas Fernandes was named the Philly Soccer Six Player of the Week after netting his first-ever collegiate brace, and sophomore newcomer Mickael Borger earned Rookie of the Week honors for heading in Temple's first goal of the season. Fernandes also earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll for his efforts on Friday.
Borger lit the fire for Temple's dominating offense in the squad's 3-0 win over the previously unbeaten Lafayette Leopards. The sophomore knocked in the first goal of the season for the Owls, propelling the team to victory with a memorable first goal in Cherry and White. Positioning himself strategically inside the 18, he got on the end of a rocketed free kick off the boot of freshman Amir Cohen. He leaped up to knock in a powerful header goal, starting the momentum for the Owls that carried over throughout the entirety of play. He also spearheaded the Temple defense to their first shutout of the season, allowing the Leopards only three shots, two on goal.
Fernandes was also a powerful offensive component in Temple's first win of the season. Building off of the Owls first goal in the 23rd minute, Fernandes' capitalized on the momentum to put the squad up by two just two minutes later. After receiving a stellar through ball from freshman Sean Karani, the senior composed himself in the box to beat the Lafayette keeper one-on-one to secure his first goal of the season. In the second half, he proved his offensive abilities once again when he converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute, sealing the deal on Temple's first win of the season. The 2019 AAC Preseason All-Conference honoree earned the brace for the first time in his career while tying his career-best single-game point total of four to help lead the squad to victory. He also fired off a team-high eight shots, five of which went on target.
The Owls will be back in action tomorrow, Sept. 17 to host the Delaware Blue Hens. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at the Temple Sports Complex.
