Women's Cross Country Levels Up at Buckeye Preview

9.28.19 | Women's Cross Country

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Temple women's cross country team stepped up its level of competition Saturday, competing against national caliber teams at the Buckeye Preview.  The Owls placed seventh in the 12-team field, providing head coach James Snyder some insight into where his team stands and where it still needs to improve.

About the Buckeye Preview
> Of the six teams that finished higher than the Owls, four were either nationally-ranked (#7 Michigan,  #16 Penn State, #21 Ohio State) or receiving votes (Illinois) in the latest NCAA Division I Cross Country Coaches Poll.
> Michigan (41 points) won the race, defeating Illinois (61) by 20 points.  Host Ohio State (74) placed third and were followed by Penn State (74), Grand Valley State (131) and Vanderbilt (140).
> Temple (240) edged Miami (Ohio) by six points with Michigan State (255), Toledo (260), Northwestern (316) and Rutgers (330) rounding out the field.

 Race Notes
> Senior Grace Moore, who passed 10 to 15 runners down the stretch, led the Owls with a 27th place showing in a time of 21:48.7.
> Senior Millie Howard, who ran through 30 runners over the final 3,000 meters, was next for the Cherry and White, finishing 38th overall with a time of 22:04.9.
> Junior Michelle Joyce also placed in the Top 50 overall, finishing 47th in a time of 22:14.0.
> Senior Erin Stenman-Fahey (89th, 23:06.9) and sophomore Lexi Walsh (96th, 23:22.2) rounded out the Owls' scorers in the meet.

From the Coach
> "Overall, it was an OK day," said Snyder. "Looking at our season collectively, this was certainly a step forward from two weeks ago when we raced at Iona, but for us to be the team that reaches our full potential we still have some growth and some steps we have to take."
> "The biggest thing I talked with our team going into this meet was to see how close our top three, our top five, our top seven could be.  I think one to three we were maybe 30 seconds apart.  One to five we were maybe a minute and 30 apart, which is way too far, and one to seven was over two minutes. That simply can't happen if we are going to reach our full potential.  So we have to keep growing and keep improving and we will get back to practice and work on some of these things over the next few weeks before we head to Penn State."

Up Next
> The Owls have a three-week break before returning to the start line on Friday, October 18 at the Penn State National Invitational.
