Women’s Tennis Opens Spring Season in Virginia

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's tennis team begins their 2020 spring season with a pair of matches in Virginia this upcoming weekend. The Owls will play at Old Dominion University on Saturday, Jan. 18 before heading to Virginia Commonwealth University the following day.
The Owls
> Temple is led by head coach Steve Mauro in his 13th season at the helm of the women's tennis program.
> The Owls' top returners include Stefaniya Surikova, Oleksandra Doroshenko, Cecilia Castelli, Oyku Boz and Yining Tian.
> Surikova and Doroshenko played in multiple matches as a doubles pair in the fall and could be expected to team up again heading into the first match of 2020.
> Temple concluded their 2019 spring season 13-7 overall. In the American Athletic Conference Championship, Memphis handed the Owls a 4-0 loss in the first round of the tournament.
> The Owls' first home match will take place on Jan. 29 against city foe Drexel at the Legacy Tennis Center, the home site for a handful of Temple's matches this season.
Scouting ODU
> ODU finished their 2019 spring with an overall record of 19-5.
> The Monarchs fell to Rice 4-2 in the Conference USA championship but were able to continue postseason play when they received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament.
> The Cavaliers of Virginia knocked out ODU 4-2 in the first round of the tournament.
> Yulia Starodubtseva collected singles wins in both matches against Rice and ODU.
> The duo of Holly Hutchinson and Brooke Pilkington are expected to play in the No. 1 doubles flight for the Monarchs.

> VCU concluded their 2019 season as the A-10 Champions after going 18-6 on the year.
> The Rams went on to the NCAA tournament, where the fell 4-1 to NC State in the first round.
> Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado was named the A-10 Performer of the Year and earned ITA First Team All-American honors after advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Individual Championship.
> The duo of Diaz-Delgado and Melissa Ifidzhen are predicted to compete in the No. 1 doubles spot for VCU.
