Wichita State Snaps Women’s Basketball Win Streak

WICHITA, Kan. — The Temple women's basketball team had their five game winning streak snapped as Wichita State used a strong second half to top the Owls 72-70 at Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers improved to 11-7 overall and 3-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while Temple fell to 11-7 on the year and 4-2 in conference action.
Keys to the Game
> The Shockers outscored Temple in both quarters of the second half as they handed the Owls their first loss of 2020.
> The Owls shot 40% from the floor in the first quarter and 53.8% in the second, but were unable to shoot more than 38.5% in the second half.
> Wichita State had better luck with their second-half shooting as they registered a field goal percentage of 63.6% in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth.
> Temple won the battle on the boards, pulling down 38 to the Shockers' 32.
> Wichita State capitlazied on the Owls' mistakes as they converted Temple's 16 turnovers into 13 points

Individual Highlights
> Mia Davis registered her 12th double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds. The junior forward finished 8-for-9 from the foul line and 7-for-15 from the floor.
> Ashley Jones poured in 19 points for the Owls and dished out a game-high seven assists. Jones also recorded a team-high two blocks.
> Marissa Mackins tallied 15 points as she went 3-for-5 from three-point range.
> Alexa Williamson registered six points and Asonah Alexander added five points to round out the box score.
First Quarter
> The beginning of the first quarter saw both teams going bucket-for-bucket, not allowing the other to go up by more than three points.
> Maya Brewer gave the Shockers their first lead of the game with a three-pointer that put Wichita State up 11-8 with 3:21 to go.
> Mackins then hit two consecutive threes to give Temple a 16-13 lead at the end of the first frame.
> Davis was a force on the boards in the first 10 minutes, pulling down five of her 15 to record half of Temple's rebounds for the quarter.
Second Quarter
> Temple shot 53.8% from the floor and 60% from three-point range as they closed out the second quarter with a 38-30 lead.
> The Owls took a 12-point lead as Alexander drained a three at the 3:22 mark, but a 5-0 run by Wichita cut their deficit to seven with a minute remaining in the half.
> The Owls committing four turnovers in the second stanza, allowing the Shockers to collect five points off of Temple's mistakes.
Third Quarter
> Wichita State outscored the Owls 25-19 in the third quarter to enter the final 10 minutes trailing by just two points.
> After Mackins opened the third frame with a layup, the Shockers went on a 7-0 run to cut Temple's lead to three.
> Jones was then fouled on an attempted three and made the trio of foul shots.
> Wichita State kept chipping away at the lead and was able to take a one-point edge on a jumper by Carla Bremaud.
> Another pair of foul shots from Jones put Temple back up by two as they headed into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
> Ashley Reid hit a three-pointer just eight seconds into the fourth quarter to give Wichita State a one-point lead.

> Davis put Temple back on top with a three-pointer but Mariah McCully immediately answered with a trey of her own on the other end to put Wichita State up 66-64.

> Trajata Colbert put the Shockers up by three when she was fouled on a made layup and hit her free shot.
> The Owls continued to trail until Davis drove to the basket to tie it at 70 with 42 seconds on the clock.
> After Jones was called for an offensive foul with five seconds remaining, the Shockers called a timeout to set up a perfect inbound play that included a lob pass to Colbert on the block for an easy layup with 3.9 seconds left.
> Temple called timeout after the bucket to advance the ball to half court, but a missed three-pointer allowed Wichita State to claim the victory.
