Women’s Basketball Battles Penn for Share of Big 5 Title Thursday Night

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team welcomes Penn to McGonigle Hall on Jan. 23 for a 7 p.m. Big 5 tip-off. The winner of the Thursday night matchup will become Co-Big 5 Champions alongside Villanova.
THE OWLS
> Temple enters their final Big 5 matchup of the season 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference.
> The Owls are coming off a heartbreaking 72-70 loss at Wichita State that snapped their five-game win streak.
> Mia Davis leads Temple with 19.6 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. The junior forward totals 12 double-doubles on the season, which ranks second-most in the nation.
> Ashley Jones adds 16.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game for the Owls.
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins is the third player in the Cherry and White to average more than 10 points per game with her mark of 13.3. Mackins leads both Temple and the American with 50 three-pointers on the year.
> Asonah Alexander is the conference's assists leader as the rookie dishes out 4.8 per game. Alexander adds 5.9 points and 5.4 rebounds each outing.
> Graduate student Lena Niang is the second leading rebounder for the Owls, ripping down 5.7 boards per game. Niang is also an offensive force with her 7.2 points per game.
LAST TIME OUT: Wichita State 72, Temple 70
> The Shockers outscored Temple in both quarters of the second half as they handed the Owls their first loss of 2020 on Jan. 19 in Wichita, Kan.
> The Owls shot 40% from the floor in the first quarter and 53.8% in the second, but were unable to shoot more than 38.5% in the second half.
> Wichita State had better luck with their second-half shooting as they registered a field goal percentage of 63.6% in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth.
> Temple won the battle on the boards, pulling down 38 to the Shockers' 32.
> Wichita State capitlazied on the Owls' mistakes as they converted Temple's 16 turnovers into 13 points
> The Shockers' bench played a big role in the win as they poured in 28 points for Wichita.
> Davis registered her 12th double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds. The junior forward finished 8-for-9 from the foul line and 7-for-15 from the floor.
> Jones poured in 19 points for the Owls and dished out a game-high seven assists. Jones also recorded a team-high two blocks.
> Mackins tallied 15 points as she went 3-for-5 from three-point range.

> The Quakers enter their final Big 5 game of the season with an overall record of 10-3 and a conference mark of 0-1.
> Kayla Padilla is the leading scorer for both Penn and the Ivy League, averaging 20.4 points per game. The freshman has been named the conference's Rookie of the Week five times and garnered Player of the Week twice.
> On Dec. 9, Padilla swept the Ivy League weekly honors along with being named Big 5 Player of the Week and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Freshman of the Week as she averaged 22.6 points, 3.3 steals and 2.0 assists over a three-game stretch. Padilla was named the Ivy League's Player and Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Jan. 6.
> Eleah Parker, Tori Crawford and Kennedy Suttle lead the Quakers on the boards as they each average 5.4 rebounds per outing. Suttle is the only player for Penn to collect more than 10 rebounds in a game, pulling down 11 against both Iona and La Salle.
> Kendall Grasela is the leading both the Quakers and the conference with 4.8 assists per game as she totals 62 on the season.

> Penn suffered a 70-58 loss to Villanova on Jan. 15 at Finneran Pavilion.
