Women’s Basketball Returns to Conference Action Sunday in Cincinnati

PHILADELPHIAThe Temple women's basketball team returns to conference action on Sunday, Jan 26 at 2 p.m. as they take on the Bearcats of Cincinnati at Fifth Third Arena. 

THE OWLS
> Temple returns to American Athletic Conference play after a thrilling win over Penn on Jan. 23 to secure a share of the Big 5 crown. 
> The Owls are now 12-7 this season with a 4-2 mark in conference play. 
> Mia Davis leads the Cherry and White with 19.7 points and 11.1 boards per game. Her rebounds per night ranks 10th in the country and first in the American. 
> Davis totals 13 double-doubles on the season, which ranks second-most in the nation. 
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones adds 16.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing. 
> Marissa Mackins also adds double-digit figures for the Owls, tallying 13.3 points per game. Mackins leads both Temple and the American with 54 three-points this season.  
> Graduate student Lena Niang is the second leading rebounder for Temple with 5.7 boards per game. Niang nets 7.2 points each night to aid the Owls on the offensive end. 
> Freshman Asonah Alexander is the American assists leader with 93 on the year, averaging 4.9 per game. Her assist/turnover ratio of 3.0 ranks first in the conference and seventh in the country. 

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 76, Penn 72
> Temple defeated Penn 76,72 on Jan. 23 in comeback fashion to win the program's 11th Big 5 title.
> Hot shooting from Penn saw the Quakers hold double digit leads in each of the first three quarters.
> Penn's advantage grew to as many as 15 points and the visitors started the fourth quarter holding a 60-47 lead.
> Temple then rattled off an 18-3 run to take its first lead of the game. Though Penn went back ahead by one, the Owls closed the game with a 7-2 surge to lock up their first Philly title since 2016-17.
> The Owls shot nearly 60% from the field in the fourth quarter to finish with a 43.1% to 41.8% shooting edge for the game.
> Temple also out rebounded Penn 47-32.
> Davis tallied her 13th double-double of the season and 30th of her career, leading Temple with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
> Jones had 17 points and six assists with 10 of her points coming in the fourth quarter.
> Mackins finished with 14 points, while Alexa Williamson tallied her first double-double of the season and the second of her career, with 12 points and 12 boards.
> Niang scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter and also grabbed seven rebounds.
> Alexander rounded out the highlights with six points and six assists.

SCOUTING CINCINNATI
> Cincinnati sits at 12-6 on the year and 3-2 in conference action. 
> The Bearcats are currently shooting 42.8% from the floor, which ranks second in the American. 
> Ilmar'I Thomas leads the Bearcats and the conference with 20.8 points per game. The forward adds 8.8 rebounds per outing to lead Cincinnati on the boards. 
> Antoinette Miller adds 15.6 points each game along with a team-best 4.4 assists. 
> Angel Rizor is the third and final Bearcat to average in double digits with her 10.9 efforts per game. The forward leads Cincinnati and the conference with a free throw percentage of 83.3.

LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati 85, Houston 66
> The Bearcats dominated Houston 85-66 on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at home.
> Ilmar'I Thomas led Cincinnati with a career-high 35 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. 
> Cincinnati had a stellar shooting night as they finished 54.8% from the floor and 57.1% from three-point range. 
> Antoinette Miller added 18 points and a game-high eight assists in the win while Angel Rizor chipped in 13 points and Sam Rodgers netted 12. 

TEMPLE VS. CINCINNATI
> The Owls lead 7-4 in the all-time series against Cincinnati. 
> The first meeting between the two teams came on Jan. 18, 2014 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where Temple topped the Bearcats 58-47.

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 78, Cincinnati 70
> In a game of runs, Temple had the final say, using a strong fourth quarter to seal the win as the Owls topped Cincinnati 78-70 in Philadelphia on Feb. 17, 2019.
> The Owls led by as many as 15 points in the second quarter before Cincinnati battled back to go ahead by four late in the third.
> Temple rebounded to lead by three after three quarters of play, before the fourth quarter surge provided the final spark the Owls needed.
> In the fourth quarter, Temple connected on 44.4% from the field, including making 11 from the free throw line. Cincinnati shot just 23.1% (6-26) in the final frame.
> For the game, Cincinnati out-shot Temple 40.3% to 37.9%, but the Owls held the advantage (46-43) on the glass and limited the Bearcats to just six second chance points.
> Four players finished in double figures for the Owls led by Alliya Butts' 23 points, 11 of which came in the fourth quarter.
> Davis and Shantay Taylor each racked up double-doubles, with Davis tallying 17 points and 13 boards, while Taylor added 12 points and 11 boards with three blocks.
> Mackins was limited due to foul trouble, but finished with 12 points in just over 19 minutes of action.
> Niang tallied eight points and Emani Mayo added six to round out the box score.
