Women’s Basketball Falls at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI — Mia Davis and Lena Niang both recorded double-doubles, but it wasn't enough as the Temple women's basketball team fell 86-81 to Cincinnati Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Arena. The Bearcats improve to 13-6 on the year and 4-2 in the American Athletic Conference, while the Owls fall to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the league.
Keys to the Game
> Cincinnati had a great shooting performance as the Bearcats finished the day shooting 51.7% from the floor.
> The Owls shot 26.1% from beyond the arc (6-23), shooting under 30% for the first time in four games.
> Temple registered a season-low six turnovers in the loss while they outrebounded the Bearcats 43-38.
Individual Highlights
> Davis notched her 14th double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Niang recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double.
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins shot 3-for-4 from three-point range to add 19 points for the Owls.
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones collected 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.
> Alexa Williamson netted eight points while Emani Mayo registered five to round out the box score.
First Quarter
> The Owls came out strong to start the game, holding a 12-5 lead until a timeout was called at 4:26.
> Cincinnati then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead until Davis collected an offensive board and put it back up to give Temple a 14-11 edge.
> Sam Rodgers answered with a three-pointer to tie the game with under a minute left in the quarter.
> Niang added two foul shots to put Temple back on top, but Rodgers responder with a jumper right before the buzzer to keep it a tie game.
Second Quarter
> Temple had a tough time scoring in the second half, shooting just 27.8% from the floor.
> The Bearcats outscored Temple 20-11, led by Angel Rizor and Sam Rodgers.
> Rizor's six points came in three-straight possessions as Cincinnati was in the midst of a 10-3 run.
> Rodgers then knocked down a three-pointer to give the Bearcats a 10-point lead with four minutes left in the quarter.
> The Owls continued to claw their way back but ultimately headed into halftime trailing by nine.
Third Quarter
> The Owls continued to struggle from the floor in the third frame, shooting under 30% for the majority of the quarter.
> Mayo gave Temple a spark when she knocked down a baseline three, cutting Cincinnati's lead to nine.
> The Bearcats were able to hold on to their lead heading into the final 10 minutes thanks to their 58.8 field goal percentage.
Fourth Quarter
> Temple outscored Cincinnati 30-24 in the final stanza as the Owls went 10-for-16 from the floor.
> The Bearcats kept their grip on the lead throughout the last ten minutes, only allowing Temple to come as close a four points.
> Mackins tallied 13 of her 19 points in the final quarter to keep the Owls from falling too far behind. The Durham, N.C. native hit her third three with two seconds remaining but it wasn't enough to push Temple past the Bearcats.
