Women’s Basketball Travels to Tulsa for First Game of the New Year

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team is set for a 3 p.m. tipoff this Saturday, Jan. 4 in Tulsa, Oklahoma for their first game of the New Year as they resume conference action. 

THE OWLS
> Temple enters their second conference game of the season following a 72-69 win at Big 5 rival La Salle on Dec. 30. The Owls lost their first game in the American on Nov. 17 when they fell 83-54 to No. 4 UConn at the Liacouras Center.   
> Mia Davis averages a double-double of 19.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game to lead the Owls. Davis also leads the conference on the boards. 
> Ashley Jones adds 17.7 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game to aid the Owls in all aspects of the game. 
> Sophomore Marissa Mackins was recently named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week following her career performance at La Salle where she knocked down seven three-pointers and amassed 28 points. Mackins averages 13.2 points and 2.8 threes per contest.
> Freshman Asonah Alexander chips in 6.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing while leading the Owls in assists (63) and steals (14). Alexander's 4.8 assists per game ranks second in the conference. 
> Lena Niang rounds out the Owls' top five scorers with her 6.8 points per game. The graduate student also pulls down 5.5 boards per contest. 

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 72, La Salle 69
> Temple shot 93.3% (14-15) from the foul line, while the Explorers finished with a 47.1% free throw percentage (8-17). 
> The Explorers outshot Temple 44.6% to 36.9% from the floor and 39.3% to 33.3% from three-point range. 
> Temple held the edge on the boards, outrebounding La Salle 49-28.
> The Owls relied heavily on Mackins and Jones, who combined for 51 of Temple's 72 points. 
> Mackins knocked down a career-best seven three-pointers as she led all players with her 28 points. Jones added 23 points and nine rebounds for the Owls.
> Lena Niang also collected nine boards while adding seven points, two blocks and two assists.
> Rookie Asonah Alexander registered a team-high five assists and added five rebounds. 
> Shannen Atkinson and Alexa Williamson each chipped in six points for Temple. 

SCOUTING TULSA
> Tulsa enters their first conference game of the season on a two-game win streak, defeating Colorado State and UTEP. Prior to the pair of victories, the Golden Hurricane had lost six-straight matchups. 
> Kendrian Elliott leads the Golden Hurricane with 16.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Her 59.7% field goal percentage ranks first in the American. 
> Elliott also totals a team-best 24 blocked shots on the year, which is the third-most in the conference. 
> Addison Richards adds 8.8 points per contest as she is currently shooting 42% from the floor. 
> Alexis Gaulden has collected a team-high 50 assists this season, averaging 4.2 per game. Gaulden ranks third in the conference in both total assists and assists per outing. 

LAST TIME OUT: Tulsa 58, UTEP 51
> Elliott led the Golden Hurricane with her double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds as Tulsa topped UTEP 58-51 on Sunday, Dec. 29 in El Paso, Texas. 
> Maddie Bittle added 10 points in the win, while Gaulden posted eight and Desiree Lewis had seven. 
> Tulsa had a 9-6 lead in blocks and a 15-6 advantage in steals, while UTEP had a 43-41 edge in rebounds and a 12-10 lead in assists.  The Miners also finished with 22 turnovers to the Golden Hurricane's 19. 
> The Golden Hurricane finished the game shooting 31%, including just 22% from behind the arc and 60% from the free throw line.
> UTEP shot 34% from the field, 22% from three-point range and 52% from the line. 

TEMPLE VS. TULSA
> Temple leads 6-2 in the all-time series against Tulsa. 
> The two programs first met on Feb. 10, 2015 during Tulsa's first year in the American. The Golden Hurricane defeated Temple 77-64 at home. 
> The Owls went on to win six-straight over Tulsa before falling in their last meeting on Feb. 27, 2019 at McGonigle Hall. 

LAST TIME THEY MET: Tulsa 64, Temple 61
> Tulsa topped Temple 64-61 in their last meeting on Feb. 27, 2019 in Philadelphia, Pa.  
> The Owls rallied back from an 11-point second half deficit, but couldn't keep the momentum over the final minutes of play.
> Despite shooting 44% from the field and 50% from three in the second half, the Owls were out-shot for the game, 37.7% to 35.4%.
> Temple led on the glass 43-41, but racked up 18 turnovers in a messy 40 minutes. 
> The Owls scored just 22 first half points, including only seven in the second quarter and trailed by 11 at the break.
> Temple outscored Tulsa 21-13 in the third quarter, and then continued the rally into the fourth, tying the game at 52-52 with five minutes to play. 
> Tulsa responded with a 6-0 run that proved to be the final separation the Hurricane needed to close the game.
> Davis notched her 11th double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
> Mackins netted 19 points for the Owls, while Alliya Butts added 12 points and six assists.
