Undermanned Temple Struggles at Tulane, 38-3

10.31.20 | Football

NEW ORLEANS – Playing without nine players on its two-deep chart including starting QB Anthony Russo, Temple (1-3, 1-3 AAC) was not able to muster any offense in falling at Tulane (3-4, 1-4 AAC) 38-3 Saturday at Yulman Stadium. It marked the first time Temple had lost to Tulane since its first meeting in the 1935 Sugar Bowl.

Head coach Rod Carey rotated backup QBs Trad Beatty (11-18, 122 yds, 1 INT) and Re-al Mitchell (5-8, 23 yds, 7 rushes 37 yds) throughout the contest, but neither was able to effectively move the team downfield.  Temple was limited to 222 yards of total offense compared to Tulane's 504 yards.

The Owls defense did force three turnovers on the day but were unable to capitalize.

How it happened

First Quarter
The Owls forced a three-and-out on Tulane's opening drive, setting up great field possession for Beatty and company. Beatty then drove the Owls right down the field on their opening drive thanks in large part to a 41-yard pitch-and-catch to wide receiver Branden Mack that put Temple inside the five-yard line. However, the drive stalled there and Temple was forced to settle for a Rory Bell field goal to give the Owls the early lead, 3-0.

On the ensuing Green Wave drive, a couple of first downs put Tulane around midfield until a fumble recovered by Freddie Johnson gave the ball back to Temple. Mitchell then made his Temple debut on the next drive leading the offense, but the Owls punted the ball back shortly after. The Green Wave mounted another drive after a few first downs brought them into Temple territory before a Christian Braswell interception inside of Temple's own 10-yard line put an end to the drive.

Second Quarter
After the Owls came up empty on their drive, the Green Wave marched down the field in 10 plays to tie the game with a 40-yard field goal. Mitchell led the Owls offense once again, rotating in and out with Beatty throughout the first half, before being forced to punt around midfield. An Adam Barry punt put the Green Wave inside their own 10-yard line to start the drive, but that wouldn't last for long as a 52-yard pass from QB Michael Pratt to WR Duece Watts pushed Tulane into Owls' territory. A few plays later Tulane would take its first lead of the afternoon midway through the second quarter with a 13-yard rushing touchdown by Cameron Carroll.

A quick three-and-out for the Owls led to another drive for the Green Wave. Tulane drove down the field and into field goal range before an Arnold Ebiketie sack forced a long 51-yard try that went wide left. A few empty possessions for each side meant the contest headed into halftime with Tulane leading 10-3.

Third Quarter
The Tulane defense stood tall once again to open the second half, forcing an Owls three-and-out. The Green Wave offense then marched into the Temple red zone for their first scoring opportunity of the second half. With the Owls defense backed up inside their own three-yard line, a forced fumble from M.J. Griffin, recovered by Jordan Magee, prevented Tulane from extending their lead.

From there, Beatty's 35-yard pass to Jadan Blue down the left sideline got the ball into Green Wave territory. However, three straight unsuccessful plays set up a fourth-and-10 which the Owls would not convert. Tulane capitalized off the good field possession, driving 65 yards in six plays, capped by a 31-yard touchdown pass from Pratt to Watts to extend the lead to 17-3 with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter.

On the following drive, a Beatty interception gave Tulane the ball near the end of the third quarter. Five plays later and Pratt again hooked up with Watts, this time for a five-yard TD to make the score 24-3.

Fourth Quarter
The Temple offense continued to struggle in the fourth quarter, having consecutive short drives. Meanwhile, Tulane scored touchdowns on its only two drives to extend its lead to 38-3.

Statistically Speaking
  • Braswell: One interception, two forced fumbles, one PBU
  • Ebiketie: One sack, two tackles for loss, seven total tackles
