Football Returns Home To Play SMU This Saturday

11.2.20 | Football

This Week
Temple struggled on the road against the Green Wave last week, losing their third game of the season. This week,
the Owls return to Lincoln Financial Field for a clash against high powered #18 SMU on November 7. Kickoff is set for
12:00pm and will air on ESPN+ and 97.5 The Fanatic.

Last Week
Last week, the Owls played without nine players on its two-deep chart including starting QB Anthony Russo. Temple
was not able to muster any offense, falling at Tulane 38-3 at Yulman Stadium. It marked the first time Temple had lost
to Tulane since its first meeting in the 1935 Sugar Bowl. Head coach Rod Carey rotated backup QBs Trad Beatty (11-18,
122 yds, 1 INT) and Re-al Mitchell (5-8, 23 yds, 7 rushes 37 yds) throughout the contest, but neither was able to provide
a spark for the Owls. Temple was limited to 222 yards of total offense compared to Tulane's 504 yards. The Owls
defense forced three turnovers on the day but were unable to capitalize. Cornerback Christian Braswell notched his
first interception of the season to go along with two forced fumbles while defensive end Arnold Ebiketie continued his
solid play, recording another sack and two tackles for loss while leading the team in tackles.

Last Time vs. SMU
The Owls last played the Mustangs on October 19, 2019 in which they lost to a nationally ranked SMU team, 45-21. The
two teams held impressive records heading into the matchup with Temple sitting at 5-1 and SMU 6-0. The Owls fell
behind early, being down 17-0 midway through the second quarter. Running back Re'Mahn Davis got things going for
the Owls with a rushing touchdown late in the second quarter, however that would be their only score of the first half.
The stifling SMU defense was led by linebacker Richard McBryde and safety Patrick Nelson, who combined for 5.5
tackles for loss. In the second half, Temple scored two touchdowns, to cut the deficit to 10, 31-21, with 13:09 left in the
fourth quarter. SMU quarterback Shane Buechele proved to be too much for the Temple defense as he finished with
457 passing yards and six touchdowns, two of which put the Mustangs in control in the fourth quarter. On defense for
the Owls, linebacker Shaun Bradley and Amir Tyler led the way with 12 tackles each.

Last Time vs. SMU @ Lincoln Financial Field
The last time SMU traveled to Lincoln Financial Field to face the Owls, Temple came out victorious with a final score
of 45-20 on October 1, 2016. The Owls dominated through the run game, with a two-7headed monster of Ryquell
Armstead and Jahad Thomas. The two combined for 239 rushing yards (159-Armstead, 80-Thomas) with each finding
pay dirt twice. After falling behind 7-0 on the opening drive, Temple went on to score touchdowns on five consecutive
drives before halftime to lead going into the half, 35-14. For SMU, quarterback Ben Hicks was responsible for the
two offensive touchdowns, finding wide receivers James Proche and Jeremiah Gaines through the air. The Temple
defense wreaked havoc all game, finishing the game with two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Armstead
put the game to bed with just under 10 minutes remaining when he shrugged off defenders on the way to a 37-yard
touchdown.
