Voice of Temple Athletics, Harry Donahue, to Enter Basketball Ring of Honor Sunday
2.12.20 | Men's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA – Harry Donahue, who has served as the play-by-play announcer for Temple Basketball and Football since the 1980s, will be inducted into the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor at halftime of Sunday's men's basketball game against #15 Villanova, announced Director of Athletics Dr. Patrick Kraft.
"Harry Donahue has been the voice of Temple Athletics, and in particular Temple Basketball, for five decades," said Kraft. "He is one of the most respected play-by-play announcers in the business and has made the call on countless Temple wins over the years. He is truly deserving of this great honor."
One of the most recognizable voices in the Delaware Valley, Donahue worked as the morning news and sports anchor at KYW Newsradio 1060 for 35 years before retiring from the 50,000-watt station in 2014.
He started working with Temple Athletics in 1984, broadcasting some Temple Football games on the radio for a few years. In 1987, his involvement with the Temple men's basketball program started as he called play-by-play for a package of games for the #1 ranked Owls on Channel 17. He would return as the play-by-play voice of Temple Football in 1993 and later take over play-by-play duties for the Owls Men's Basketball program in 2002.
A member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, Donahue has also served as the host for Temple Football and Basketball coaches' shows as well as Temple Now, a biweekly TV show on TU athletics that aired in the 1990s, over his tenure. He has performed emcee duties at various banquets as well, including the Temple Athletics Hall of Fame celebrations.
Besides Temple and KYW, the Philadelphia native has also done play-by-play for Philadelphia Eagles preseason games, Philadelphia 76ers contests and voiced over NFL Highlights on NFL.com. An avid golfer, Donahue also has hosted the popular Inside Golf show that has aired on NBC Sports Philadelphia for the last eight years.
Donahue has also received two Pennsylvania Associated Press Awards for his coverage of the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies World Series run.
