Gymnastics Stays Local Friday for Pink Invite

PHILADELPHIA—The Cherry and White are set to compete in the Pink Invite on Friday evening at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. Temple will take on Illinois State, Southern Connecticut, Ursinus and West Chester in the invitational. The competition is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
The Owls
> The Owls are led by head coach Josh Nilson, who is in his second season leading the Cherry and White.
> Last time out, Temple continued its road stretch on Saturday, Feb. 15 at the Bowling Green Tri-Meet. The Owls scored a 193.55, falling to Bowling Green (194.55) and Illinois State (194.35) in Anderson Arena, but earned multiple season-high scores to cap off another strong weekend of competition.
> The Cherry and White had their best performance on floor last weekend, tying their second-highest mark of the season with a 48.85. Junior Faith Leary and senior Jaylene Everett had stellar performances on floor, earning a 9.8 and 9.725, respectively. Junior Tori Edwards was also strong on the event, earning a 9.675. Sophomore Ariana Castrence was phenomenal on floor, tying her third-best score of the season at 9.825. Oster was also fantastic, tying her teammate at 9.825 to post a season-high, tie her career best and tie with Castrence and Illinois State's Angelina Labat for third place in the event.
> Castrence, Everett, Garin and Leary all hold places in the top three of the ECAC individual rankings. Garin ranks second in the conference on beam, while Everett is third on vault and Leary is first on floor. Castrence owns the top spot on vault and in the all-around.
> Freshman Madison Brooks was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for her outstanding performance on vault, bars and beam in Saturday's tri-meet at Bowling Green.
Scouting Illinois State
> Illinois State is led by Bob Conkling, who has been the head coach of the Redbirds for 13 seasons.
> Last time out, Illinois State faced Temple and Bowling Green, posting a 194.35 to take second in the tri-meet.
> The squad earned a 48.725 on vault, 49.05 on bars, 48.25 on beam and 48.325 on floor.
Scouting Southern Connecticut
> Head coach Mary Fredericks is in her first season leading Southern Connecticut.
> The Owls are coming off a two-week hiatus from competition, as they scored a 190.025 to take third against Bridgeport and Brown on Feb. 9.
> SCSU posted a 47.725 on vault, 46.375 on bars, 47.7 on beam and 48.225 on floor.
Scouting Ursinus
> Ursinus is led by Kim Valenti, who has been at the helm of the program for two seasons.
> Ursinus last competed on Feb. 9, scoring a season-high 188.95 to take second place behind Springfield and ahead of Ithaca.
> The Bears posted a 47.25 on vault, 47.2 on bars, 47.35 on beam and 47.15 on floor.
Scouting West Chester
> Head coach Barbara Cordova in in her 10th season leading the West Chester squad.
> Last time out, the Golden Rams tied its season-high with a 193.25 to earn second place at Penn's quad meet.
> West Chester earned a 48.025 on vault, 48.475 on bars, 47.95 on beam and 48.8 on floor.
West Chester & Ursinus Ties
> Graduate assistant coach Cassie Hageman graduated from West Chester in 2019 and competed as gymnast for the Golden Rams.
> The Cherry and White will face former Temple gymnast India Anderson and former assistant coach Kim Valenti on Friday night. Anderson is now an assistant coach at Ursinus while Valenti is at the helm of the program.
