Women's Basketball Downs Memphis on School Day

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple women's basketball team notched a 78-64 win over visiting Memphis at the Liacouras Center on Wednesday afternoon. The Owls moved to 15-10 overall (7-5 AAC) in front of over 3,600 school children from the local community, as Temple celebrated "School Day." Memphis falls to 13-13 overall, 4-8 in conference play.

Keys to the Game
> A huge first quarter run set the tone for the Owls in the game, as Temple outscored Memphis 23-13.
> Memphis got one back after the second quarter, but the Owls led by nine at the break
> Temple led by as many as 18 points in the second half, as the Owls notched their 15th win of the season.
> For the game, Temple shot 52.3% from the field, holding Memphis to 40.3%. 
> The Owls were out-rebounded 37-31, but racked up 48 points in the paint. 

Individual Highlights
> Junior Mia Davis tallied a game high 23 points to go along with eight rebounds.
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones finished with 21 points adding nine assists.
> Graduate student Lena Niang 14 points with a career high four assists.
> Senior Shannen Atkinson added eight points while sophomore Alexa Williamson netted seven to round out the scoring.

First Quarter
> Memphis scored the first five points of the frame, but Temple responded in a big way.
> The Owls rattled off a 16-0 surge spanning over seven minutes, taking control of the game with a 16-5 advantage.
> Temple went up as many as 14 points, before Memphis got a few back during the final two minutes of play, closing the gap to 23-13.

Second Quarter
> Temple extended its lead to 32-18 on a Marissa Mackins lay-up, but Memphis responded with a run of the own.
> Memphis scored 13 of the next 17 points, to get the lead down to just five, 36-31 with 1:26 on the clock.
> Temple gained a little more breathing room down the stretch, scoring four unanswered to lead 40-31 at the half.

Third Quarter
> Temple increased its lead slightly, using a 19-17 advantage in the third quarter.
> A Niang three put the Owls up 49-37, but Memphis closed the gap to nine, 57-48.
> The Owls got a buzzer beater from Davis to close the quarter up 11 (59-48).

Fourth Quarter
> A 15-8 start to the quarter all but wrapped it up for Temple, with the Owls up 18.
> Memphis closed the game on a 8-4 run, but Temple finished out the 78-64 win.
