Women’s Basketball Falls at ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Despite a large first quarter lead, the Temple women's basketball team fell to ECU, 56-50, Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates improve to 8-19 (5-8 AAC) while the Owls drop to 15-11 (7-6 AAC).
Keys to the Game
> After Temple led 22-11 at the end of the first quarter, ECU outscored the Owls in the remaining three frames to earn the come-from-behind win.
> The Owls held a slight edge on the boards, outrebounding ECU 38-37.
> Temple also recorded a better field goal percentage than the Pirates (36.4% to 32.8%). But the Owls struggled from three-point range, shooting just 24% from beyond the arc (6-25).
> The Pirates converted Temple's 19 turnovers into 14 points.
Individual Highlights
> Junior Mia Davis collected her 15th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
> Redshirt-sophomore Ashley Jones led Temple with 14 points and five assists.
> Sophomores Marissa Mackins and Alexa Williamson each notched six points.
> Graduate student Lena Niang and rookie Asonah Alexander dished out four assists apiece.
First Quarter
> The Owls opened the game on a 13-2 run with Mackins recording two threes and Jones adding another triple.
> Niang and Jones each dished out three assists in the first frame as all members of the starting five collected a bucket.
> Temple held a 22-5 lead with two minutes to go, but a 6-0 run by the Pirates cut the lead to 11 at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter
> ECU used their late run in the first quarter to sustain their energy heading into the second stanza.
> The Pirates outshot Temple 12-9, knocking down two treys as they shot 66.7% from long range.
> ECU collected four steals as they forced eight second-quarter turnovers by the Owls.
> Temple continued to control the action on the boards with nine rebounds, led by Williamson with four.
Third Quarter
> Temple struggled from the floor after the half as they notched a 23.1 field goal percentage.
> After a dish from Jones to Williamson for an easy layup gave Temple a 33-25 lead, the Pirates hit back-to-back threes to bring ECU within two points.
> However, the Owls remained in the lead as they closed the quarter on a 7-2 run.
Fourth Quarter
> The Pirates controlled the fourth quarter, outscoring Temple 10-5 over the first six minutes of play.
> Lashonda Monk made an impressive hookshot for the Pirates at 3:29 to tie the game at 45.
> On the following possession, Taniyah Thompson gave the Pirates their first lead of the game with a wide-open layup.
> Thompson followed her go-ahead layup with a three-pointer before Shannen Atkinson stopped ECU's run with a layup of her own, keeping Temple within three points.
> Jones tied the game at 50 with a clutch three at the 1:17 mark.
> The Pirates then went on to score six foul shots in the final minute to walk away with the win.
