2.28.20 | Women's Fencing
PHILADELPHIA - The No. 5 Temple fencing team will look to defend its NIWFA title Saturday, heading to Drew University for its first post-season event of the year. The Owls have won the title for the past 24 consecutive years, taking the epee and foil team titles last year.
Temple went 31-9 in dual competition this season, with wins over No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 6 Penn State, and No. 8 Penn. The team's fifth-place ranking is the highest in program history, topping its previous high of sixth from 2017.
The Owls went 4-1 at the Temple Invite to close out regular season play, with Kerry Plunkett's 10-3 record leading the team. Margherita Calderaro went 8-3 and Naomi Ross went 7-4 to lead the epeeists, while Aryana Abtin and Kennedy Lovelace went 7-6 to lead the foilists.
At last year's championships, Plunkett took the sabre title with a dominating 15-1 bout in the gold-medal match. Marielle Luke placed second in epee, narrowly falling in the championship bout 15-13. The Owls had four finalists and three semifinalists last season, with two earning NIWFA First Team honors and one earning NIWFA Second Team honors.
Temple's post-season will begin in Madison, N.J. for the NIWFA Championships, with NCAA Regionals and the NCAA Championships set for later this month.
