PHILADELPHIA – Temple Football coach Rod Carey has added a few new members to his 2020 staff. Salim Powell, who most recently worked with the New York Jets, was hired as a defensive analyst. Carey also hired Xavier Garcia and Caden Murphy as graduate assistants.
"Salim has some experience at both the college and pro level that will help us," said Carey. "Xavier and Caden are both good young coaches who have experience with our staff. All three will be great additions to the program."
Powell spent the last three seasons with the Jets before returning to the Philadelphia area. Powell is a native of Willingboro, N.J. and played running back and defensive back at Willingboro High. He played four years and earned two degrees at Southeast Missouri State before becoming a coach at his alma mater. He spent six seasons working in a variety of roles at Southeast Missouri State before working with the Jets.
Garcia comes from the University of Central Oklahoma where he was a graduate assistant last season. Garcia was a defensive line graduate assistant at Angelo State University in Texas in 2018. He began his coaching career in 2017 at New Mexico Institute Junior College where he coached the linebackers. Garcia played defensive end for two seasons and earned his bachelor's degree from Eastern Kentucky University playing for Temple's defensive line coach Walter Stewart.
Murphy was a student assistant for four years, three under Carey, at Northern Illinois University. He worked with the quarterbacks and graduated in December 2019 with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology before coming to Temple. He is currently pursuing a master's degree in higher education.
