Women’s Basketball Travels to USF for Sunday Showdown

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team will head south to take on USF Sunday, Feb. 9 at 12 p.m. at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Fla.

THE OWLS
> Temple enters Sunday's game at 13-9 overall and 5-4 in the American Athletic Conference. The Owls are currently ranked sixth in the conference.  
> Junior Mia Davis leads Temple with 19.0 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. Her boards per night ranks 14th in the country and first in the American. 
> Davis totals 14 double-doubles on the season, which ties for third-most in the nation. 
> Redshirt sophomore Ashley Jones adds 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Jones leads the Cherry and White with her 80.7 free throw percentage. 
> Marissa Mackins is the third Owl to average double-digit points with 14.2 per night. Mackins leads both Temple and the American with 65 three-pointers this season. 
> Graduate student Lena Niang is the second leading rebounder for Temple with 6.0 boards per game. Niang nets 7.2 points per game and is the second leading three-point shooter for the Owls. 
> Freshman Asonah Alexander is the American assists leader with 101 on the year, averaging 4.6 per game. Her assist/turnover ratio of 2.8 ranks first in the conference and ninth in the country. Alexander adds 5.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. 

LAST TIME OUT: Wichita State 85, Temple 75
> The Owls fell to a hot-shooting Wichita State 85-75 at McGonigle Hall Wednesday, Feb. 5.
> Wichita State shot 51% from the field, including a massive 55.6% from three, connecting on 15 from long range.
> Temple shot 43% from the field and out-rebounded the Shockers 37-30, but turned the ball over 20 times in the game.
> The Owls built an eight point lead after the first quarter, but a 24-9 Wichita State surge in the second turned the game around.
> The Shockers led by as many as 16 before Temple cut it to seven midway through the fourth quarter.
> Back-to-back-to-back threes from Wichita State then put the game out of reach for Temple.
> Jones finished with 24 points and five assists.
> Mackins added 18 points and six helpers.
> Alexander and Alexa Williamson each tallied 12 points with Alexander adding seven rebounds.
> Davis was held to nine points in the game, but pulled down a team-high eight boards.

SCOUTING USF
> Freshman Elena Tsineke leads USF with 11.9 points per game. Her 87.2 free throw percentage is both a team and conference-best. 
> Sydni Harvey is the only other Bull to average double digits with her 11.1 efforts per game. 
> Bethy Mununga leads USF in rebounding and ranks second in the conference with 9.6 boards per outing. Mununga also adds 9.8 points each game. 
> Elisa Pinzan is the American's leader in assists per game with 4.8. Pinzan totals 81 on the year, which ranks sixth in the conference. 
> The Bulls' allow their opponents an average of 57.2 points per game for the second lowest scoring defense in the conference. 
> USF holds the largest rebounding margin in the conference, pulling down an average of 10.4 more boards than their opponent each outing. 

LAST TIME OUT: Cincinnati 60, USF 55
> The Bulls suffered a five-point loss on Feb. 2 at Cincinnati. 
> USF led by as many as 13 points in the first 20 minutes of play before holding a 32-23 lead at the half.
> Cincinnati came out strong in the second half, outscoring USF 37-23 and holding the Bulls to just five points in the fourth quarter. 
> USF committed a season-high 30 turnovers that converted into 16 points for the Bearcats. 
> Elisa Pinzan led the Bulls with a game-high 19 points, while Elena Tsineke and Sydni Harvey added 11 and 10 points, respectively. 

TEMPLE VS. USF
> USF leads the all-time series 12-3 against the Owls.
> The Bulls claimed the first meeting 64-51 on Jan. 7, 2014 in Tampa, Fla.
> Prior to their most recent win over USF on Jan. 16, 2020, Temple's last win against the Bulls came on Feb. 19, 2017 when the Owls upset No. 22 USF 77-71 at McGonigle Hall. 

LAST TIME THEY MET: Temple 66, USF 63
> After a tight first half where neither team led by more than three points, Temple created separation with a huge 24-13 third quarter.
> The Owls led by as many as 18, before USF mounted a fourth quarter comeback.
> The visitors got the lead down to two points late in the final frame, but Temple held on for the win.
> Temple worked around a 43-31 rebounding edge by USF to out-shoot the Bulls, 43.6% to 37.3%.
> The Owls also connected for nine threes as they recorded only their third ever win over USF and first since 2017.
> Davis led all players with 25 points, adding eight boards and three assists.
> Jones had 16 points, six rebounds, and four helpers.
> Niang ended her night with nine points, while Mackins had eight, and Alexander, seven.
> Senior Shannen Atkinson rounded out the box score with seven rebounds.
