Millie Howard Qualifies for 2020 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships
3.4.20 | Women's Track and Field
PHILADELPHIA – After a phenomenal regular season and a dominant performance at the conference meet, senior Millie Howard has punched her first-ever ticket to the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Howard, who will be competing in the mile, is the first Temple Owl to qualify for the indoor championships since 2015 and is just the second in 33 years, joining just Temple-great Blanca Fernandez in the record books for this century.
"Making nationals has been a goal of mine since I came over to America as a freshman almost four years ago," said Howard. "I'm so delighted that all of my hard work has finally paid off. Making indoor nationals is even more exciting as it's only the top-16 in the NCAA rather than the top-24. I can't wait to fly out to New Mexico, compete against the best in the nation and see what I can do."
The championships, hosted by the University of New Mexico, will be held on March 13th and 14th at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Howard will compete in the mile semifinal on Friday, March 13 at 7:35 p.m. ET (5:35 p.m. MST) with finals for the event scheduled for Saturday at 6:20 p.m. ET. She enters the meet seeded 11th out of 16 qualifying participants.
Howard earned a bib at the championship meet after running the fastest mile in the history of the American Athletic Conference, clocking in at 4:36.37 at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 14. The North Yorkshire, England native shattered Temple's program record in the event by over four seconds, resetting the time of 4:40.60 set by Fernandez back in 2015. In one of the best performances of her career, Howard crushed her previous personal record in the event by almost 10 seconds to run one of the top times in the country.
Howard is coming off of an outstanding showing at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships to prime her for success at nationals. She led the team with 14 individual points, helping the Owls to a program-record point total and their highest-ever finish of third at the AAC championships. She earned a trio of medals, picking up all-conference nods in the DMR, mile and 800m run.
On day one of the conference championship meet, she notably anchored Temple's distance medley relay that captured its first-ever gold medal and reset the conference meet record to 11:26.89 after hitting qualifying times for both the mile and the 800m earlier that day. On Saturday, she started the day in a thrilling mile final where she sprinted down the last straightaway to earn silver with a time of 4:51.85. A few hours later, she picked up a bronze medal in the 800m to help Temple sweep the podium in the event, crossing the finish line right behind her teammates in 2:10.36.
Howard was named the Under Armour/OwlSports.com athlete of the week twice in February individually and a third time as a part of Temple's DMR team that reset the program record to 11:14.87 and finished the season ranked 17th in the nation. She was also named the AAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week for her record-breaking mile performance in February.
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 7:15 p.m. (ET) March 13 and starting at 6 p.m. (ET) March 14. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9 p.m. (ET) Monday, March 16 on ESPNU.
