Jones Named American Newcomer of the Year as Women’s Basketball Trio Earns AAC Honors

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball trio of Ashley Jones, Mia Davis and Asonah Alexander were honored with American Athletic Conference regular season awards, announced by the league office Friday morning.
Jones highlighted the awards for Temple as she was named the American Newcomer of the Year and was tabbed to Second Team All-Conference. The guard out of Philadelphia has been a huge addition to the Owls' backcourt during her first season on Broad Street. Jones currently averages 16.5 points per game to rank second on the team and fifth in the conference. She adds a team-best 4.2 assists per game along with 4.5 rebounds per outing. Jones stands in the top-10 in the conference in field goal percentage (41.6%) and free throw percentage (79.8%).
Davis, a forward from Baltimore, Md., was named to the First Team All-Conference for the second-straight season. The junior captain leads the Owls and the conference with 10.4 rebounds per game while ranking first for Temple and third in the American in both points per game (18.8) and field goal percentage (46.6). She's racked up 17 double-doubles this season, which ties for fifth-most double-doubles by a single player in the country this year. Davis has hit the 20+ points mark 12 times in 28 games, including a season-high 29 points at St. Joseph's. In the win at Houston, Davis pulled down a career-best 18 boards while chipping in 16 points during her seven-game double-double streak. She continues to climb into Temple women's basketball history as she sits at ninth in both career points (1,415) and career rebounds (786).
Alexander, a guard out of Prospect Park, N.J., was named to the All-Freshman team as she is in the midst of a solid rookie campaign. Alexander has dished out a team-high 114 assists thus far, ranking fourth in the conference. Her assist/turnover ratio has consistently led the conference and ranked in the nation's top-20 all season. Alexander's current mark of 2.53 leads the American and sits at 15th in the country. The rookie has registered two double-doubles this year and almost finished with a triple-double against Villanova, notching 19 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. She has recorded five or more assists on 11 different occasions, including a career-high 10 assists against SMU.
Jones, Davis and Alexander will lead the Owls into the American Athletic Conference Tournament, starting Friday afternoon. Temple has earned the #8 seed and will play #9 ECU at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN3.
