A four-year member of the Owls, Claire Savage was part of the 2019 team that captured both the Dad Vail overall and women’s points trophies. A mainstay in Temple's varsity boats, she joined the team as a novice for the 2016-17 season, and has been a top contributor for Temple ever since. After earning gold with the novice eight at the Head of the Schuylkill in 2016, she moved up to stroke the second varsity eight boat in the spring, taking silver at the Kelly Cup and bronze at the Kerr Cup. As a sophomore, Savage nabbed a bronze at the AAC Championships and gold at the Kelly Cup and Murphy Cup Regattas, all with the Temple 2V. As a junior, she earned Dad Vail gold (2V8), as well as earning her second career AAC medal (2V8, 3rd). She also nabbed silvers at the Knecht Cup and Kerr Cup Regatta, while recording a top-10 finish with the varsity eight at the Head of the Charles. Savage will graduate from the College of Liberal Arts with a degree in Psychology.

In the book of your life, what’s the title of the Temple chapter? The title of the Temple chapter is “Growth and Change.”

What’s the best part about being a member of the crew team at Temple/what will you miss the most? The best part about being a member of the rowing team is being a part of something bigger than yourself. I know that no matter what life brings me I will be able to get through it, that is because I have gone through so much with my team. I will miss being around motivated people who want to achieve the same goals as me. I will miss being able to walk down the street to go to my teammates house. I will also really miss seeing everyone every day. I will really miss being a part of this team.

What is your favorite memory of being a student-athlete at Temple? My favorite memory was winning Dad Vails my junior year in the 2V8. I remember so many parts of that race and every single person in that boat wanted to pull for each other. It’s fun going fast!

If you could give advice to your freshman year self, what would it be? I would tell my freshman self that this sport does not define you, but instead you define yourself. I would tell myself not to overthink everything and to just go for it. Not to hold back and really enjoy the journey.

Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself being successful in whatever career path I choose. I am hoping to go into the mental health field. I also see myself continuing to grow and change into a better person. I am excited to see where I end up.

I want to thank my family. My family has been my biggest support system and without them I wouldn’t be where I am now. They gave me so much support and advice along my journey. I am forever grateful for all of the sacrifices they made for me. I love them so much and they are my favorite people in the world.Claire Savage, Temple Rowing Class of 2020
