Along with the seven runners who were honored by the organization, Temple track and field was named a USTFCCCA All-Academic team with their cumulative 3.4 GPA.
"The academic performances of our student-athletes has been outstanding over the years as a team, but each of the ladies on our roster strives to make good grades," commented head track and field coach Elvis Forde. "A big shoutout goes to our academic advisor Nick Plack, as he is a great mentor for our teams."
"It is also the most athletes that have received USTFCCCA honors here at Temple," expressed Forde. "Congratulations to all of them for making us proud."
The criteria for being named a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete:
> The student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25.
> Must have completed two semesters or three quarters at the nominating institution.Â
> For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished ranked in the national top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any relay championship event, certifiable by their place on the NCAA Division I descending order lists on TFRRS for Indoor Track and Field (including performances achieved outside the qualifying window during the indoor season).
Temple had two DMR squads finish in the top 48 in the country during the indoor season. At the Columbia Challenge in January, the quartet of Gottlieb, White, Lally and Howard ran a time of 11:23.27 to rank 40th in the country. The crew of Gottlieb, Lally, Howard and Mallorie Smith recorded a time of 11:07.72 to sit at 17th in the nation.Â
Howard is the only Owl to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors each of her four years. The North Yorkshire, England native earned her undergraduate degree from Temple with a 3.98 GPA in economics. She collected all-conference honors with second-place finish in the mile and a bronze medal in the 800m. Howard received a bib as an 11th seed at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, earning All-American honors for the first time in her career after she ran both a program and conference record of 4:36.37 in the mile, which ranked 17th in the nation. Howard's 2:08.11 mark in the 800m at the Columbia Challenge landed her in the country's top 85 for that event. Â
Gottlieb earns the All-Academic award for the third-straight season. At the AAC Indoor Championships, Gottlieb earned silver in the 800m and was a member of the winning DMR to collect all-conference recognition in both events. She ran a 2:07.98 in the 800m at the Valentine Invitation in Boston, Mass. to rank 71st in the country. The political science major will enter her senior year with a cumulative GPA of 4.0.Â
This award marks the first USTFCCCA All-Academic honor for Lally. The Galway, Ireland native ran to a first-place finish and earned all-conference honors in the 800m at the AAC Indoor Championships. Her 2:06.35 time in the same event at the Valentine Invitational ranks 31st in the country. Lally holds a 4.0 in Athletic Training as she heads into her senior year.Â
Rising senior Brown earns her first All-Academic recognition after winning her first-ever American Athletic Conference Indoor title in the high jump. Brown earned gold with a mark of 1.79m (5' 10.5"), ranking 21st in the country. The neuroscience major finished her third year on Broad Street with a GPA of 3.55.
White collected her first USTFCCCA award following a successful sophomore campaign with the Owls. Along with being a part of the winning DMR squad, White recorded a personal-best 54.47 in the 400m dash to earn fifth-place at the AAC Indoor Championships. Her mark in the event put her amongst the top 96 in the nation. White enters her third season in the Cherry and White with a 3.55 GPA in Accounting.Â
Joyce is another first-time recipient of the All-Academic award thanks to her 4.0 GPA in Bioengineering. The rising senior ran the best 3000m of her career at the AAC Indoor Championships, finishing 10th with a mark of 9:46.37. Joyce ran the second-fastest 5K in Temple history at the Valentine Invitational, clocking in at 16:49.56, which set a program record at the time.Â
Moore earned her first USTFCCCA All-Academic honor after her final indoor season with the Owls. At the AAC Championships, Moore placed sixth in the 3000m with her school-record breaking time of 16:38.15, which ranked in the top 100 in the country. The Merrick, N.Y. native graduated from TU with an Exercise Science degree and a GPA of 3.89.
"These awards are a testament to the work each student-athlete has put in on the track and in the classroom this winter along with the tradition of excellence our academic advisor, Nick Plack, has established for our team," reflected assistant track and field coach James Snyder. "Without his commitment to their success, there's no way any of this is possible."Â Â
