Arians vs. Rhule
9.18.20 | Football
PHILADELPHIA - This Sunday, the Carolina Panthers will travel to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While most of the interest in the game will be to see either the first Carolina win of the Matt Rhule era, or the first Buccaneers win in the Tom Brady era, a group of people in Philadelphia will be tuning in for other reasons.
Â
No one needs to remind Temple fans that both head coaches – Rhule and Tampa Bay's Bruce Arians – began their coaching careers in North Philadelphia.
Â
Temple has developed a reputation as a training ground for future college head coaches. However, did you know that it is the only school to currently have more than one head coach move on to the NFL ranks.
Â
This situation is a rare occurrence for any school as it is the first NFL matchup in 17 years of head coaches who also served as head coaches at the same college. The last time it happened was September 21, 2003 when Cleveland played at San Francisco. The Browns' Butch Davis and 49ers' Dennis Erickson had each led the Miami Hurricanes.
Â
The first time Arians became a head coach in Arizona he filled his staff with many former Owls and he has done the same at Tampa Bay. In all, seven staff members - Keith Armstrong, Todd Bowles, Clyde Christiansen, Lori Locust, Todd McNair, Nick Rapone, Kevin Ross - cut their teeth at Temple.
Â
That successful recipe was not lost on Rhule who surrounds himself with 13 staff members with Temple roots - E.J. Barthel, Evan Cooper, Matt Delgado, Ed Foley, Al Holcomb, Frisman Jackson, Jeff Nixon, Sean Padden, Marcus Satterfield, Jeremy Scott, Mike Siravo, Phil Snow, and Pat Stewart.
Â
The field of play will also feature Owls on each side although very heavy-handed for the Panthers. Their roster includes six Owls – WR Robby Anderson, SAF Sam Franklin, WR Keith Kirkwood (IR), TE Colin Thompson, QB Phillip Walker, LB Tahir Whitehead. The Buccaneers lone Temple player is LB Chapelle Russell who is currently on the practice squad.
"That is really cool," said current Temple head football coach Rod Carey. "It should be a four-hour Temple commercial on Sunday. I caught up with Coach Rhule over the summer and we talked about Sam Franklin who was here last year. I've had a few phone conversations with Coach Arians. They have Chapelle down there. I'm excited for them."
