Women’s Basketball Looks to Win Fifth Straight on Wednesday Against Cincinnati

PHILADELPHIA — The Temple women's basketball team will host Cincinnati on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at McGonigle Hall. The 3:30 p.m. game will be aired on ESPN+.

THE OWLS
> Temple enters Wednesday's contest on a four-game winning streak to remain just one-of-two undefeated teams in the American Athletic Conference. #16 USF (9-1, 6-0 AAC) is the only other program without a conference loss this season. The Owls hold a 4-3 (4-0 AAC) mark on the year. 
> The Owls are averaging 41 rebounds per game, ranking second in the conference behind USF's 46.7.
> Senior Mia Davis averages just shy of a double-double with 21.1 points and 9.9 rebounds to lead the Owls. So far, the forward has recorded four double-doubles this season.
> Junior Alexa Williamson is the Owls' second-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game, while pulling down 5.7 boards each game. 
> Rookie Jasha Clinton was tabbed the AAC Freshman of the Week on Dec. 28 to mark Temple's first weekly honor by the conference this year. Clinton averages 10.3 points, 4.0 boards, 3.4 assists and 1.5 steals per contest.
> Sophomore Asonah Alexander ranks 11th in the country with her 6.1 assists per game and second in the American Athletic Conference with 1.6 blocks per outing. ALexander is Temple's second-leading rebounder with 8.0 per night.
> Senior Emani Mayo adds 9.1 points and 4.4 rebounds per game to round out the starting lineup for Temple. 

OWLS' LAST TIME OUT: Temple 61, UCF 58
> Temple won their fourth-straight game to remain unbeaten in the American Athletic Conference with a 61-58 victory over RV UCF on Saturday, Jan. 9 at McGonigle Hall.
> Both teams started slow, with defense being the name of the game for the first quarter. Only 19 points were scored by both teams in the first.
> The Cherry and White offense found a spark heading into the second quarter, scoring immediately out of the break and going on a 12-4 run to take the lead. 
> The Owls were able to earn a two-point lead at halftime (26-24), with the defense holding the Knights to 12 points in each half.
> UCF got within one after the half, but Mia Davis' three points gave Temple some breathing room.
> The Knights cut Temple's lead to just one with less than a minute left in the game, but the Owls were able to seal the win with two pairs of free throws.
> Jasha Clinton and Kash Ayuso both posted career-high points, with Clinton scoring 17 and Ayuso scoring seven.
> Emani Mayo's steals three steals were a season-high while Asonah Alexander's three were a career-high.
> Temple shot 34.5 percent from the field (19-of-55), while the Knights shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48).
> Davis' 19 points led both teams, while Brittney Smith's 17 led UCF.

BATTLE OF THE PRESEASON PICKS
> Temple's Mia Davis and Cincinnati's Ilmar'I Thomas were both named the American Athletic Conference Preseason co-Player of the Year. 
> This will be the first meeting between the top players this season. 
> Thomas leads the AAC in scoring with 25.1 points per game, followed by Davis' 21.1 points per night. The two standouts are the only two players in the conference averaging 20+ points. 
> Davis holds the edge on the boards, averaging 9.9 rebounds per game while Thomas pulls down 8.0.
> Both Davis and Thomas are on the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award Watch List by Her Hoop Stats. However, Thomas was the only one to be named to the 15-player Midseason Watch List for the award.

SCOUTING CINCINNATI
> The Bearcats arrive in Philadelphia with a record of 2-7 (1-4 AAC).
> Ilmar'I Thomas leads both Cincinnati and the AAC while ranking fifth in the country with 25.1 points per game. She averages 8.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists to lead the Bearcats in all three categories. 
> Thomas also leads the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 55.2% so far this season. 
> Cincinnati's next leading scorer Arame Niang with 8.0 points per contest. Niang is a relative of Temple alum Lena Niang, who played for the Owls from 2017-20. 
> The Bearcats are currently shooting 41.6% from the floor, ranking third in the AAC. However, their opponents have been able to shoot 42.2% from the field. 

BEARCATS' LAST TIME OUT: Tulane 68, Cincinnati 49
> Cincinnati suffered a 68-49 loss to Tulane at home on Saturday, Jan. 9. 
> Thomas was held to just nine points, her only single-digit scoring game this season. 
> Jillian Hayes led the Bearcats with 16 points, followed by Jadyn Scott with 10.
> Tulane shot 45.8% (22-48) while the Bearcats shot 32.7% (17-52). From three-point range, Cincinnati shot a disappointing 13.6% (3-22). The Green Wave knocked down five three-pointers on their way to shooting 33.3% from beyond the arc. 
> The Bearcats committed 24 turnovers for the third time this season, which allowed Tulane to score 28 points off turnovers.  

TEMPLE VS. CINCINNATI
> Temple leads the all-time series against the Bearcats, 7-5. 
> The first meeting between the two programs came on Jan. 18, 2014 in Cincinnati. The Owls walked away with a 58-47 victory. 

LAST TIME THEY MET: Cincinnati 86, Temple 81
> The Bearcats topped Temple 86-81 in Cincinnati on Jan. 26, 2020. 
> Cincinnati had a great shooting performance as the Bearcats finished the day shooting 51.7% from the floor. 
> The Owls shot 26.1% from beyond the arc (6-23), shooting under 30% for the first time in four games. 
> Temple registered a season-low six turnovers in the loss while they outrebounded the Bearcats 43-38. 
> Davis notched her 14th double-double of the season with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, while graduate student Lena Niang recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds for her third career double-double. 
> Alexa Williamson netted eight points while Emani Mayo registered five to round out the box score.
