Women's Basketball Wins Back and Forth Contest Over Villanova, 68-62

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Temple women's basketball (3-3, 0-0) won a tightly-contested affair over the Villanova Wildcats (2-3, 0-0) on Saturday afternoon, 68-62. A back and forth contest throughout the entire contest, the Owls pulled away with under a minute remaining thanks to a jump shot by freshman Aniya Gourdine and a block from forward Alexa Williamson on the other end.
Statistical Leaders
> Gourdine: 17 points, 5-6 shooting, four rebounds, four assists
> Williamson: 16 points, 50% shooting
> Jalynn Holmes: team-high six rebounds
First Quarter: Temple 19, Villanova 19
> An 8-0 run to begin the game got the Wildcats out in front in the early goings of the game.
> The Owls answered back with an 11-2 run of their own highlighted by a three-pointer from Emani Mayo as well as a coast-to-coast steal and layup by Jasha Clinton.
> Freshman Gourdine knocked down two three-pointers, one at the end of the quarter, to tie the game at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter: Temple 32, Villanova 33
> A 9-4 run through the first four minutes of the second quarter brought the Wildcats back out in front.
> Six points by forward Williamson helped the Owls dominate the paint in the quarter.
> An offensive rebound and subsequent put back by freshman Tiarra East at the buzzer brought the Owls within one going into the break.
Third Quarter: Temple 48, Villanova 48
> Four straight points from Mia Davis put the Owls in the lead, and shortly after, back-to-back three-pointers from Caranda Perea and Jasha Clinton stretched Temple's lead to nine.
> Both teams suffered through a three-minute scoring drought midway through the quarter.
> A layup by Williamson ended Villanova's 8-0 run with a few minutes left remaining in the period.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 68, Villanova 62
> A 6-0 run in the first two minutes of the quarter gave the Wildcats a 54-48 advantage.
> A Clinton three-pointer trimmed the Villanova lead before two free throws by Williamson tied the game again at 58 with four minutes remaining.
> After Gourdine drained a long two-point jump shot with just under two minutes remaining, a block by Williamson virtually sealed the game for the Owls.
