Volleyball Defeated in Four by SMU

11.7.21 | Women's Volleyball

PHILADELPHIA – On Sunday afternoon in McGonigle Hall, the Temple volleyball fell to the SMU Mustangs (13-11, 9-5 AAC) in four sets by the score of 25-23, 19-25, 16-25, 20-15.

 

Outside hitters Miray Bolukbasi and Gem Grimshaw led the Owls offensively with 16 kills apiece in the four-set loss.  

 

RECAPPING THE MATCH

 

Set 1

  • Gem Grimshaw willed her Owls to the 25-23 set one win with four of her seven first set kills after trailed by their largest margin of the set, six points, 10-4. The senior took a set-high 16 attempts with no errors.
  • The set would remain tied at 19-19 before the Cherry and White took the lead for good.
  • The Owls came out hot offensively, hitting .295 as a team.
  • Defensively, five Owls registered five team blocks against the Mustangs in the opening set. Kayla SpellsPeyton Boyd, and Katerina Papazoglou tallied two individual blocks in the opening frame.

 

Set 2

  • SMU led never trailed in the second set, winning 25-16.
  • The Mustangs, Hannah Jacobs, and Jamison Wheelers combined for 10 putaways in the set, while as a team, Southern Methodist would hit .310 compared to the .111 hitting percentage TU would put together in set two.
  • Grimshaw would again lead the Cherry and White with five more kills, while Bolubasi added four.

 

Set 3

  • The Mustangs jumped out to a 20-9 lead, before the Owls scored five unanswered points off Grimshaw's serve to cut the lead to 20-14. That would be tight as the set would get as SMU went onto win 25-16.
  • Owls' junior Taylor Davenport registered four of her seven kills on the night in the third set, while Southern Methodist's Zairyn Hemsley matched with her the set high.


Set 4

  • The Mustangs overcame Temple's slim 3-2 lead early in the final set to win 25-20. SMU had a 5-4 advantage before Jaydn Bauss came through with three of her set-high six kills to extend her team's advantage to 9-5. 
  • Bolukbasi also added six kills for TU in the final set, her highest output of the afternoon.

 

Overall, the Owls drop to 5-20 on the season and 1-13 in the American.

Temple will be on the road the next two weekends, starting on Friday, Nov. 12, as they travel to play Wichita State and Sunday, Nov. 14 against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
