Volleyball Falls in Three at East Carolina

3.12.21 | Women's Volleyball

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Temple volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match at the hands of East Carolina on the road on Friday afternoon. The Pirates took the match 25-20, 25-22, 25-20, as Temple dipped to 1-4 in the conference, 7-5 overall. ECU improved to 3-6 overall, 1-6 in conference play.

How It Happened
> Temple's offense struggled and the Owls had no answer for ECU's athletic pin hitters.
> The Pirates hit .204 for the match, working around five Temple blocks, while the Owls were held to just a .094 clip on offense.

Individual Highlights
> Juniors Gem Grimshaw (14 kills, 11 digs) and Tyler Lindgren (26 assists, 13 digs) both tallied double-doubles to lead the offense.
> Junior Miray Bolukbasi added seven kills while sophomore Kayla Spells chipped in with six.
> Senior Katerina Papazoglou had 13 digs and freshman Falanika Danielson notched 12.

Set One: ECU 25, Temple 20
> Temple hit just .050 in the first set, as the Pirates hit. 294, but still, the set was close.
> Temple started up 2-0, but six straight points from ECU put the hosts up four.
> The Owls battled back to tie at 12-12 and later at 16-16.
> East Carolina scored five in a row to open up a 21-16 advantage, before the Owls cut it to 22-20.
> However, that would be the last that Temple scored, as ECU took it 25-20.

Set Two: ECU 25, Temple 22
> Neither team gained an advantage in the second set until a 4-1 run put the Owls up 9-7.
> ECU countered with six-straight, going up 13-9.
> Temple rallied to cut the lead to 15-14, but the Pirate's offense rolled to an 18-14 advantage.
> With ECU leading 22-17, Temple went on a 5-0 run to tie it at 22-22, but ECU got the final three points to go up 2-0.

Set Three: ECU 25, Temple 20
> The third frame was tight at the start, but ECU held a one point lead through the early going.
> ECU took over midway through action, going on a 7-1 run to lead 15-7.
> The Pirates lead grew to 20-11, before Temple battled back to get within three at 20-17.
> The teams traded points until the Owls got the lead down to 22-20, but that's as close as they would get as ECU scored three straight to win it, 25-20.
