Program-Record Six Fencers Qualify For NCAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA - For the first time in program history, six fencers will represent Temple at the 2021 NCAA Championships. Sophomore Margherita Calderaro (epee) has been selected for the second-straight year, while senior Eva Hinds (sabre), sophomores Zoe Turner (sabre) and Sarah Park (epee), and freshmen Elizabeth Novoseltseva (foil) and Anastasia Yankovskiy (foil) have earned their first career selections. 

The selections were announced by the NCAA Men's and Women's Fencing Committee on Thursday. The overall field of 144 competitors who will participate in the 2021 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships. This year's fencing championships will consist of participants from 20 member institutions. Pennsylvania State University will host the championships at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, Pennsylvania, March 25-28, 2021.

Fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the top-four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places, and non-advancing fencers being awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.

"We are thrilled to have six fencers qualify for this year's NCAA Championships," head coach Dr. Nikki Franke said. "One of our team goals this year was for six of our ladies qualify, so we are thankful to have this opportunity. The whole team has worked hard and it's been very satisfying to see us succeed this season. Every one of our fencers has contributed to a great season and gotten us to this point. We're looking forward to continuing our success at the championships." 

The opening rounds of the NCAA Championship will begin on March 27, with epee being at 9 a.m., foil to begin at 11 a.m., and sabre to begin at 1:30 p.m. Rounds 4 and 5 will be on March 28 at 9 a.m. for all three weapons, with the semifinals round to begin at 1 p.m.
