3.22.21 | Women's Gymnastics
PHILADELPHIA -- For the first time in 29 years, Temple gymnastics will compete as a full team at NCAA's. The Owls have earned a berth into the NCAA Championships, starting with regionals competition April 1-3. Temple has been selected to the Salt Lake City Regional along with #3 LSU, host and #6 Utah, #11 Arizona State, #14 Kentucky, #17 Boise State, #21 Southern Utah, #22 Utah State, and Arizona.
First On The Floor
> Temple will compete head-to-head against Arizona on the first day of competition.
> The Owls-Wildcats winner will then advance to the second round of competition to compete against LSU, Kentucky, and Utah State.
> Utah, Arizona State, Boise State, and Southern Utah will compete in the other second round meet, with the top two teams from each session advancing to the regional finals.
Individual Qualifiers
> Should Temple not advance as a team, three Owls will move on in the competition - juniors Ariana Castrence and Julianna Roland, and senior Faith Leary.
> Castrence has earned NCAA selection in the All-Around, Temple's 11th overall selection, but the first since Katie Canning in 2009.Â
> Roland earned NCAA spots on vault and floor, becoming Temple's only individual competitor to ever be selected on more than one event.Â
> Leary earned an NCAA berth on floor, the second Owl to do so, after India Anderson in 2019.
History in the Making
> Temple will be making its first full-team appearance at an NCAA Regional since 1992, and its first ever since NCAA berths were determined by national rankings.
> Ranked 41st with three weeks in the season, the Owls needed a furious push to qualify, and they did just that.
> Temple closed the regular season with its four-best scores of the season to jump into the 30th spot in the nation, securing an NCAA bid.
> On March 7 at home, the Owls recorded a 195.400, the best score of the season, thus far.
> Temple got even better the following weekend, scoring a 195.925, setting the all-time road record at Towson.
> Just two days later, the Owls again surpassed the season-high and all-time road record, going 196.025 at Towson.
> Needing a 195.575 to qualify to regionals at the EAGL Championships, Temple exceeded all expectations, going for a program-best 196.500 to win both the EAGL title and qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Ticket Information
> Ticket information for the Salt Lake City Regional will be announced on Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. MT.
> In conjunction with the NCAA spectator guidelines for championship events, the Maverik Center will allow for approximately 2,500 spectators at the Salt Lake City Regional.
