Temple University mourns the loss of one of its baseball greats, John McArdle.  He passed away on April 10 at the age of 66.

"John was a beloved man, not only here at Temple University but in the Philadelphia sports community," said Acting Director of Athletics Fran Dunphy. "He was a great player during the heyday of Temple Baseball and later served under Hall of Fame coach Skip Wilson. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this time."

Mr. McArdle, a fixture in Philadelphia area baseball for the last four decades, helped lead Temple to three NCAA Tournaments during his four seasons with the Owls (1973-77). The third baseman/catcher captained Temple's 1977 team that advanced to the College World Series, batting .315 that season with seven doubles, one triple, one home run and tying for second on the team with 30 RBI.

The former Temple assistant has also coached baseball, football and basketball at Chestnut Hill Academy, where he served as a teacher. McArdle had also umpired for over 20 years.

His coaching experience included 17 years as CHA's basketball coach, seven years as its baseball coach and six years as a Temple assistant baseball coach.

Mr. McArdle was the son of the late Francis J. McArdle and Anne E. (Mick) Lopez and was the loving partner and husband to the late Susan L. Schwarz for over 10 years.  He was the loving father to Michael R Stieffenhofer (Dana) and John F. Beecher.  He will also be greatly missed by his caring siblings: Francis J. (Denise), Mary Anne (Jeanne), Matthew W. (Carleen), Patricia Davis (the late Michael) and Edward (Dawn) as well as his many nieces, nephews.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to John's Life Celebration visitation on Friday April 23rd from 4PM-9PM at the John F. Givnish Funeral Home (10975 Academy Rd, Philadelphia 19154). Services and internment will be private.

Services will be streamed live on the John F. Givnish FaceBook on Saturday April 24th

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted to Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in memory of John E. McArdle Class of '73, (500 W. Willow Grove Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118), Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Shriner's Hospital would be greatly appreciated.
