PHILADELPHIA - Temple women's rowing senior Elaine Tierney earned a spot on the USRowing U23 National Team on Tuesday, June 15 at the team trials held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.

Tierney will represent the U.S. at the World Championships held on July 7-11 in Racice, Czech Republic.

"I'm so excited and honored to be able to row for the USA. This has been a goal of mine for several years but would not have been possible if my coaches had not showed me that I could do it," said Tierney.  "I am grateful for all the support my coaches, teammates, friends and family have given me and for all of the opportunities that have come my way.  Getting all the right pieces together to make this happen has been a long process, but I have enjoyed each step.  I can't wait to see how far Emily and I can go!"

Tierney, who was competing with the Green Racing Project at the trials, teamed with Emily Molins to win the final of the lightweight women's double sculls. The duo finished with a time of 7:30.54 to win by 19 seconds.

"Lanie is one of the hardest working women on our team and she has been a force since her freshman year," said Temple women's rowing coach Rebecca Grzybowski.  "She consistently shows up every day with the desire to get better, and she's been working toward this goal for a few years now.  I'm so excited to see her hard work pay off with her first National team berth, and we can't wait to watch her represent the United States, and Temple, on the world stage!"

A native of West Chester, Pa. (Unionville HS), Tierney is a four-year member of the Owls' Varsity Eight boat.  She was named the program's 2018 Newcomer of the Year and in 2020 was Temple Women's Rowing Athlete of the Year.  She will return to Temple for the 2021-22 utilizing a fifth season of eligibility due to the shortened 2019-20 campaign due to the pandemic.

Another Temple women's rowing senior, Gabby DiMarco, just missed qualifying for the national team. DiMarco, who also competed with Green Racing Project, finished second by just under four seconds in the women's double sculls final.

"To have two women racing at US team trials is an important step for our program and we are really proud of both Gab & Lanie," said Grzybowski.
