PHILADELPHIA — Head men's soccer coach Brian Rowland has announced the team's 2021 schedule. The Owls will look to build on a successful 2020-21 season which saw the team finish with a 5-4-2 record and a second consecutive trip to the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
"The team and I are very excited about the upcoming season, and to begin our preparation for a very tough schedule. We have been able to keep some strong local rivalries as well as build upon some more recent ones and national profile matchups," said Rowland. "The strength of our conference has continued to grow year after year, and the new double round robin format has only enhanced the competitiveness within the AAC. Our goal every year is to compete for championships, and this year's schedule will no doubt prepare our team to do just that."
The Owls will play three exhibition matches against some prominent programs for a preseason tune-up. First Temple will travel to College Park to take on Maryland (Aug. 14), before a road match against Delaware (Aug. 16). The Owls will then return to Philadephia to welcome the St. John's Red Storm on Aug. 20.
Temple will begin the season with back-to-back trips to New Jersey to face Big Ten opponent Rutgers (Aug. 26) and Big East opponent Seton Hall (Aug. 30). The Owls will then open the home portion of the schedule with a four-game homestand. The Cherry and White will play host to Manhattan (Sept. 4) and Big East foes Villanova (Sept. 11), and Georgetown (Sept. 14), before kicking off the conference slate with the SMU Mustangs (Sept. 18).
Next is a trip to Orlando to face reigning conference champion UCF (Sept. 24). Temple then returns home to take the field against Memphis on Sept. 29, followed by a visit to the Mustangs on Oct. 3.
The Owls begin a two-game homestand with a match against the Princeton Tigers (Oct. 6) before returning to conference play three days later with a visit from USF (Oct. 9). The Cherry and White will then hit the road to Tulsa to face the Golden Hurricane on Oct. 16.
A Philly Soccer Six bout against Penn (Oct. 19) concludes a brief road stint for the Owls before UCF comes to the Temple Sports Complex (Oct. 22). Temple will pay a return visit to Memphis (Oct. 27) before concluding the home schedule with Tulsa for the second year in a row on Oct. 31.
The Cherry and White will play a single match in November to round out the regular season against USF (Nov. 5), with the American Athletic Conference Championship beginning on Nov. 10. Both the semifinals and championship (Nov. 13) will be held at the home site of the No. 1 seed.
