Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Freshman Ethan Whitney made eight birdies in route to a six-under round of 66 to lead Temple Golf to a record-setting day during the second round of the GolfWeek Fall Challenge Monday. As a team, the Owls tied a record with the best under-par round with an 11-under 277 and currently are in third place at the 18-team event. The only other time a Temple team shot an 11-under was at the 1982 ODU Invitational.
Recapping the Day
> Whitney, who had three birdies in his debut round of 74 Sunday, bogeyed his first hole and then birdied four of the next five. He closed the front nine with another bogey but played the back nine at four-under to complete his day and tie for 12th overall.
> Whitney's six-under round is tied with multiple Owl golfers for second on the all-time list. However, he is the first Temple golfer to shoot six-under on a par 72 course.
> Conor McGrath continued his hot play, shooting a four-under 68 and leads Temple and is tied for fourth overall with a nine-under 135. McGrath, who had an eagle on hole four to go along with two birdies, currently is two shots off the lead.
> Dawson Anders also had a sub-par round, shooting a two-under 70. He had five birdies for his round and currently is tied for 22nd overall.
> Graham Chase, who had three birdies on the day, completed the Temple scorers with a one-over 73. He sits tied for 56th overall while Joey Morganti, who had an eagle in his first collegiate round Sunday, rounded out the Owl golfers with a 78. He is tied for 79th overall.
The Field
> Mercer continues to lead the field with a 29-under 547, 17 shots better than second place Delaware (564) and 18 shots better than Temple (565). Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech and tied for fourth with 567 while Campbell and California Baptist are four back and tied for sixth (571).
> Wofford's Harry Jones, who is playing as an individual, leads the 93-player field with a 11-under 133.
> Temple is paired with Mercer and Delaware for the final round. The teams tee off at 9:15 am from hole one.
Quotable – Temple Coach Brian Quinn
> "This record-tying round is now surprising as we have good players and a good team. These are a solid group of kids. We have three veteran guys with solid experience and two young players that have a tremendous amount of firepower. It is a really nice mix."
> "Obviously Ethan shooting 6-under is phenomenal. He is playing great and look forward to seeing him continue to play well for us."
