Women’s Soccer Drops to Tulsa, 4-1

9.30.21 | Women's Soccer

PHILADELPHIA – Temple women's soccer (3-4-3, 1-2-0 AAC) fell to Tulsa (6-5-1, 1-2-0 AAC), 4-1 on Thursday night at the Temple Sports Complex. The early Golden Hurricane lead set the tone for the match, resulting in the Owls first home loss of the season.

How It Happened
  • The Cherry and White came out strong with an opportunity from the offensive duo of Emily Kavanaugh and Hailey Gutowski in the 11th minute. Kavanaugh made a run down the right wing, sending a cross to a streaking Gutowski. The attempt seemed promising, but Gutowski sent the ball just high, keeping the game at a draw.
  • Tulsa earned the advantage just three minutes later as Kayla Fernandez fired a rocket from outside the box, hitting the crossbar and bouncing down across the goal line for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Golden Hurricane found two more goals in a two-minute span from Megan Nielsen. Nielsen found the deflection off a free kick in the 22nd minute, and a cross from Mia Darden in the 24th minute to triple the Golden Hurricane lead.
  • Despite facing the 3-0 disadvantage, the Owls remained persistent, finding a goal of their own just four minutes later. Lexy Endres, the Owls assist leader, lined up for a free kick, sending a long ball into the box. Roisin McGovern appeared above the crowd, sneaking a header past Tulsa goalkeeper Reagan Beeding to put Temple on the board.
  • Tulsa entered the second half hungry for more, scoring again in the 55th minute. Mia Darden shifted around her defender, burying a shot into the back right corner for the 4-1 lead.
  • The Owls did not let up, taking seven more shots in the remainder of the half, including a shot off the crossbar from Marissa DiGenova in the 70th minute and another off the crossbar from Endres in the 81stminute.
From the Coach
"Even when Tulsa scored their first three goals, we were still pushing," Nick Bochette said. "We had a great response with a goal from Roisin to slow the lead but it was still an uphill battle and we were digging ourselves out. Moving forward, we know the work that we need to do, it just has to be cleaner and more efficient."
