Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Temple women's basketball team (9-8, 4-2 AAC) dropped their second conference game of the season to the Memphis Tigers (12-6, 3-4), 64-61. A big second quarter for the Tigers saw them take a double-digit lead before the Owls were able to claw back to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. However, two three-point shots from Memphis turned the tide to give the Tigers the win.
Statistical Leaders
> Mia Davis: 24 points and 11 rebounds
> Aniya Gourdine: 10 points, six assists, four rebounds
> Tiarra East: nine points, 10 rebounds
First Quarter: Temple 13, Memphis 14
> Six early points from Davis as well as a corner three-pointer from Tiarra East got the Owls out to a hot start as they opened the game on a 13-3 run.
> The rest of the quarter belonged to the Tigers, however, as Memphis went on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter in the lead.
Second Quarter: Temple 21, Memphis 29
> Two layups and a jump shot from Memphis' Jamirah Shutes extended the Tigers lead in the opening minutes of the quarter.
> Two points apiece from Temple's Jasha Clinton and Kyra Wood cut the deficit to three with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
> Five points from the Tigers including a three-pointer from Shutes gave Memphis an eight-point lead going into the half.
Third Quarter: Temple 44, Memphis 41
> The Owls came out firing on all cylinders in the second half thanks to early layups from Davis and forward Alexa Williamson.
> Good free-throw shooting from Kyra Wood coupled with four straight points from Gourdine got the Cherry & White out on a 10-3 run.
> The two two sides battled back-and-forth for the rest of the quarter as neither team could seperate themself by more than three points.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 61, Memphis 64
> The fourth quarter featured another back-and-forth affair as Davis scored eight of the first 10 points for the Owls in the opening minutes.
> A layup from Gourdine put the Owls in front by two points with just under three minutes remaining, but Temple was unable to hold on thanks to two three-pointers from Memphis' Madison Griggs.
> Free throws from Davis and a layup from Gourdine kept the Owls within striking distance, but they could not apply the finishing touch.
