Football Loses Conference Opener at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Temple (2-3, 0-1) lost its conference opener to the Memphis Tigers (4-1, 2-0) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, 24-3. The story of the game was Memphis' quarterback Seth Henigan who was successful in the air and on the ground throwing for 195 yards and running for 60 yards. The Memphis defense stood tall, holding the Owls to just a field goal and forcing multiple takeaways.

Keys to the Game
  • Memphis began the game with the ball, after Temple elected to defer to the second half. The teams traded three-and-outs on each of their first possessions. After stopping the Tigers' offense for the second consecutive drive, quarterback E.J. Warner completed a catch-and-run with receiver Jose Barbon that went for 78 yards, a career long for both. The defense for both sides held tight for a scoreless first quarter.
  • After a closely contested first half, kicker Camden Price knocked in his first field goal attempt as a member of the Temple Owls, connecting from a career-long 47-yards to make it 3-0 Owls.
  • Temple stopped Memphis in the 3rd quarter on 4th-and-1 in the redzone to keep the Tigers off the scoreboard. On the ensuing Memphis drive, the Tigers would find the endzone to take their first lead of the game, 7-3. The Memphis touchdown was the first points Temple allowed in 118 minutes and 19 seconds of game time dating back to the game against Rutgers. Memphis would add a field goal to extend its lead to seven early in the fourth quarter. The Tigers added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score 24-3.

  • Tra Thomas' second quarter sack marked the 17th of the season for the Owls, tying the 2021 team total.
