Volleyball Earns Victory Over Tulane Led by Taylor Davenport's 24 kills

Owls improve to 5-0 in five-set matches this season

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple volleyball team improved to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in the American Athletic Conference with a 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 24-26, 25-22, 15-11) victory over the Tulane Green Wave on Friday night. The Owls moved to 5-0 in five-set matches this season behind Taylor Davenport's 24 kills, a career-high 55 assists from setter Magdalena Rogalska, and a double-double from junior transfer Jelena Prolic's 15 kills and 13 digs.
 
The Cherry and White also contributions from three other players with double digits in digs, including Falanika Danielson's 19, freshman Nalani McBride's career-high 13, and 11 from sophomore Nikki Shimao.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Redshirt-senior Peyton Boyd tallied 13 kills and a .440 season hitting percentage.
  • Junior Kayla Spells wrangled up a season-high seven kills and three digs in the five-set Owls' victory.
  • Freshman Samantha Jo Mikosky tied a match-high five blocks and led four other Temple players to a total of six team blocks.
 
Set 1 (Temple 26, Tulane 24)
  • The Green Wave held a 14-11 lead in set one, but Temple started its come back with Davenport and Boyd teaming up for four kills.
  • The earned the set victory by winning 15 of the last 25 points.
  • Temple held the Green Wave to a .188 hitting percentage with the help of three team blocks, while Mikosky individually had three blocks to lead the set.
  • The Owls hit .308 in the first set with Boyd (.800) and Davenport (.300) hitting over .300, while each player came away with four kills apiece.
  • Tulane's Amarachi Osuji almost single-handedly kept her team close in the set with a set-high seven kills.
  • There were 15 ties in set one, along with five lead changes.
 
Set 2 (Tulane 25, Temple 21)
  • Temple was able to tie the score six times in set two, but the Green Wave held the Owls for the set victory.
  • Tulane spread their attack in set two with five players with two or more kills on the way to a .267 hitting percentage.
 
Set 3 (Tulane 26, Temple 24)
  • Temple jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Tulane chipped away winning the next three points to tie the score at four all, but that's all of what the Green Wave needed to take grasp of a the lead and never giving it back.
  • Melissa Kolurbasi came through with three of her six set kills down the stretch to the lead the Green Wave to the set victory.
  • The Green Wave held the Cherry and White to a .159 hitting percentage, while hitting .359 for themselves.
  • For the second set in the match Osuji led her team with a set-high seven kills.
  • The Owls' got service aces from Spells, Danielson, and Shimao to keep them within striking distance.
 
Set 4 (Temple 25, Tulane 22)
  • The Owls found themselves down by three points in set four, but this time they were able to pull off the victory.
  • Temple chipped away at the three-point deficit, eventually tying the score at 11-11. The Owls used an 8-2 run to pull away from the Green Wave and force the fifth set.
  • Prolic led the Owls with five kills on 10 swings, Davenport had four kills, and Spells had three kills on eight attack attempts.
  • McBride led all servers with two service aces.
 
Set 5 (Temple 15, Tulane 11)
  • Temple built a 4-3 lead early on, but Tulane scored four unanswered points, forcing the Cherry and White to use a timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout, Temple regrouped and scored seven of the next eight points. In the run, Davenport had three consecutive kills for the Owls. The Temple defense forced Osuji into consecutive attack errors.
  • The Cherry and White held the Green Wave to a .150 hitting percentage, while hitting .250.

"I loved our ability to ride the wave. There were some highs and lows and we were able to capitalize on those highs. I talked to them (team) about staying calm and executing in those moments," said Hampton-Keith. "We relied on everyone tonight. It was nice to see team volleyball."
