Men’s Soccer Heads to FAU for Battle of the Owls

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple men's soccer team (2-7-2, 0-5-0 AAC) will head south to face the Florida Atlantic (FAU) Owls (3-5-3, 2-1-2 AAC) this Friday. This will be the first time Temple has faced FAU as a conference opponent in any sport as Florida Atlantic joined the American this season for men's soccer. They will join the conference in the rest of their sports in fall 2023.
THE OWL POST
> Mike Eijgendaal has five assists this season. He is tied for fifth in the AAC in total helpers.
> Yann Kouemi leads Temple in goals with three.
> Four players on the roster have topped over 800 minutes. Elyad Shojaei leads all Temple players with 888 minutes. He is followed by Eijgendaal and Fridtjof Andberg, with 852 and 829, respectively. Draven Barnett rounds out the 800-minute club with 825 minutes played.
> Goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski is ranked fifth nationally in saves per match (5.7). Temple as a whole is ranked sixth in saves per game (5.73).
> Two yellow cards were pulled on Owls' midfielder Ferran Vera Filella in Temple's previous match against Memphis. He will miss Friday's game as a result.
SCOUTING FAU
> FAU earned a 9-7-1 record in 2021. The Owls went 2-4-2 in a loaded C-USA, with three of the four losses coming to ranked teams and the fourth coming against powerhouse Charlotte. FAU had a run in the C-USA tournament, defeating Charlotte in penalty kicks and also taking down No. 4 Marshall. The Owls took No. 15 Kentucky to overtime in the conference title match but fell 2-1.
> Florida Atlantic has overachieved so far in 2022 after coming in eighth in the AAC preseason poll. Thus far in the season, the Owls are 3-5-3 and 2-1-2 in conference. FAU has wins over UAB and FAU. They most recently faced No. 14 Tulsa and No. 13 Charlotte, falling to Tulsa and drawing Charlotte.
> Forward Blake Dean has been among the hottest players in the American as of late. The graduate student has been named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll in back-to-back weeks. He scored a goal against UCF and scored, as well as passed for an assist, in the draw against No. 13 Charlotte.
> Joey Worthen leads FAU in his sixth season with a 29-51- 9 record. Worthen had a rough start to his time in Boca with a pair of two-win seasons in his first two years but has rebounded as of late. He has taken the Owls to winning records in back-to-back seasons in 2020-21 and 2021.
