Men’s Soccer Defeats FAU 1-0 on the Road

10.14.22 | Men's Soccer

BOCA RATON, Fl. - The Temple men's soccer team (3-7-2, 1-5-0 AAC) took down the FAU Owls (3-6-3, 2-2-2, AAC) 1-0 Friday night in Boca Raton, Florida. Sean Karani scored the game-winning goal for the Cherry and White in the 70th minute, while goalkeeper Eoin Gawronski made six saves for the clean sheet.

How it Happened
> The first half was exceptionally slow. In the 28th minute, freshman George Medill headed the first shot on goal of the match off a corner. It was turned away by the FAU keeper.
> Eoin Gawronski saved the first two shots on target by Florida Atlantic in the 41st and 42nd minutes.
> Gawronski made another stop to open the second frame, followed by a dart by Sawyer Koza saved by FAU.
> In the 62nd minute, Temple picked up the first of seven yellow cards pulled on both teams combined in the second half.
> The Owls broke through in the 70th minute. After a strong chance by Mike Eijgendaal was saved by FAU, Temple pressed hard and was rewarded with a turnover forced by Rocco Haufglockner. The freshman quickly found Eijgendaal who in turn found Karani at the top of the box. The forward was sandwiched between two defenders but was able to get a shot off clean and perfectly placed the ball on the bottom left corner to beat the goalkeeper and secure the lead.
> FAU did not seriously threaten for the remainder of the match. Florida Atlantic fired a shot on target in the 79th minute that was easily corralled by Gawronski. Temple took the win by a score of 1-0.

Game Notes
> Florida native Guy Panzner smashed his career high in minutes with 64.
> This was the sixth shutout of Gawronski's career in only his 20th game.
> This win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Owls and launches them back into AAC playoff contention.
> Nine total cards were pulled in the match. Six on FAU and three on Temple.

From the Coach
> "We looked good. I think the freshmen are growing up, we are group for the present, but for the future we have some really great young players. We've had to do a lot of growing up this year, and circumstances have forced the young guys to the front, but they are growing into the role and we saw that tonight." -- head coach Brian Rowland.

Up Next
> The Owls return to TSC Tuesday as they host out-of-conference foe Stony Brook. The 7 p.m. match will be streamed on ESPN+. Attendance is free to all fans.
