Temple Falls to Navy in Overtime, 27-20

10.29.22 | Football

ANNAPOLIS, MD- Temple (2-6, 0-4) fell to Navy (3-5, 3-3) by a score of 27-20 in overtime. Despite trailing early, the Owls battled their way back, sending the game into overtime thanks to a 22-yard field goal by K Camden Price with under a minute remaining. Temple would ultimately fall in overtime but the story still remained the team's resilience on both sides of the ball.

Keys to the Game

  • After a Temple punt on its first drive, Navy was given good field position on the Temple 48-yard line. Navy would use the excellent field position along with its triple threat rush attack to help drive them down into field goal range. Kicker Daniel Davies would make the attempt putting the Midshipmen up 3-0.

  • A muffed punt by the Owls led to prime field position for the Midshipmen, eventually leading to a touchdown by FB Daba Fofana, giving Navy a 10-0 advantage.

  • Navy took it right back after an interception by CB Elias Larry. However, despite the minimal rest, the Owls' defense held strong, limiting Navy to only a field goal, giving Navy a 13-0 lead.

  • A blocked punt would once again give Navy the ball deep in Temple territory but the defense stood its ground and forced a turnover on downs with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half.

  • Temple then found its groove on offense on the ensuing drive, taking the ball 50-yards downfield. The drive ultimately set up Price with a 38-yard field goal, making the score 13-3.

  • Temple would make the first impression of the second half when OLB Layton Jordan would disrupt an option play and take the ball into the endzone, making the score 13-10 just a minute into the half.

  • After forcing Temple to turn it over on downs, Navy marched 56 yards downfield ending in an Anton Hall touchdown, putting Navy up 20-10 to end the third quarter.

  • Two big plays by WR Zae Baines and RB Edward Saydee set the Owls up in the red zone, giving QB EJ Warner an opportunity to connect with WR Amad Anderson Jr. for a 20-yard touchdown, bringing the Owls within a score, 20-17.

  • LB Yvandy Rigby would give the Owls the ball back after a big tackle on fourth and one.

  • With the clock winding down, Anderson Jr. made a highlight reel one-handed catch to put the Owls on the Navy five yard-line with under two minutes to go. The Owls failed to punch it in but a field goal by Price tied the game up at 20 to send it to overtime.

  • In overtime, Navy only took two plays to punch it into the endzone with QB Xavier Arline rushing it in from 23 yards, putting the Midshipmen up 27-20. The Owls' fate was sealed after CB DeShaun Peele picked the ball off in the endzone, giving the Midshipmen a 27-20 victory.
