Women's Basketball Falls in Airtight Battle to No. 24 Villanova, 74-71

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (1-3, 0-0 AAC) fell to Big 5 opponent and No. 24 ranked Villanova Wildcats (4-0, 0-0 Big East). The Owls had a chance to tie the game up late, but fell short on their final possession.

 

Statistical Leaders
> Villanova's Maddy Siegrist scored a game-high 41 points along with 16 rebounds.

> Tarriyonna Gary had a career-high 23-points, with 21 of those points coming from deep. She shot 7-9 from beyond the arc and 8-10 from the field.

> Aleah Nelson followed behind Gary with 20 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds. 

 

First Quarter: Temple 18, Villanova 19

> The Owls led for the first four minutes of the game, setting the tone early. 

> The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair between the Owls and the Wildcats, ending at 19-18 with the Owls trailing by one.

 

Second Quarter: Temple 36, Villanova 33

> With 3:45 left in the second quarter, Nelson hit a three-point jumper to put the Owls ahead by two at 29-27.

> The Owls took the lead and kept with it, leading by three at the half. 

 

Third Quarter: Temple 57, Villanova 49

> East scored the first bucket of the second half, giving the Owls a five-point cushion (38-33) to start the third quarter. 

> The Owls took their largest lead of the game with 12 points at the 6:42 mark of the third quarter

> Gary hit a three-point jumper with seconds left in the third, giving the Owls an 8-point advantage over the Wildcats with a score of 57-49 entering the fourth quarter.

 

Fourth Quarter: Temple 71, Villanova 74

> The Wildcats tied the game up at 57-57 with 6:29 left on the clock.

> Villanova went on an 8-3 run over the next four minutes to secure a 67-62 lead. 

> The Owls battled back, with Nelson and Gary scoring big buckets to put the score at 70-68, 'Nova with 34 seconds left. Temple had the ball down 71-68 following a missed free throw with ten seconds left, but missed the game tying bucket to give the Wildcats the win.

> The Owls head to Saint Joseph's to take on another Big 5 opponent, the Hawks (4-0) Wednesday, November 23rd. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
