Women's Basketball Falls to Old Dominion on the Road, 77-65

NORFOLK, Va. – The Temple women's basketball team (2-5, 0-0 AAC) fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs (4-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) 77-65 Wednesday night. Temple forward Jalynn Holmes set a Temple career-high with 12 points. She has been a member of the Cherry and White for two seasons, this was her 34th game.
First Quarter: Temple 13, Old Dominion 14
> The first portion of the game saw ODU jump out to an early lead 8-2. Old Dominion's Amari Young scored the first eight points for the Monarchs.
> Holmes came off the bench and quickly turned the tide for the Owls. The forward scored five points and grabbed two boards in quick succession to cut into the lead.
> Holmes led the Cherry & White with 5 points after the first frame.
Second Quarter: Temple 29, Old Dominion 36
> ODU scored the first two buckets of the second to extend the lead out to six (19-13).
> Temple countered with a 9-2 run to take its first lead since it was 2-0. Holmes earned her second and-1 of the game, while guard Tarriyonna Gary netted a jumper to put TU up 22-21 with 6:17 remaining.
> The Monarchs responded with a 10-0 run (31-22). The Owls fought back into the game with free throws from Aleah Nelson and a layup from Jasha Clinton.
> The teams exchanged threes to end the half. Gary hit a buzzer beater to conclude the first half (36-29).
> Holmes led Temple with eight points and four rebounds after the first half.
Third Quarter: Temple 49, Old Dominion 55
> Old Dominion came out of the gate hot with a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 12.
> The sides exchanged baskets for the next few minutes before TU found its footing in the second half, scoring five straight to cut the lead down to five with 4:10 left on the clock.
> Temple got as close as three (49-46) off a Nelson triple before the Monarchs heated up again to put the lead back to nine. Gary hit a three on TU's final possession to put the score at 55-49 at the end of three.
> Holmes continued to lead the Cherry & White through the third in both points (12) and rebounds (4). She bested her previous Temple career-high of 11 in this frame.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 65, Old Dominion 77
> ODU scored the first 11 points of the fourth (66-49) before Clinton broke the run with a pair of free throws.
> The Owls made several attempts at a comeback, including four free throws and threes from Nelson and Ines Piper, but ODU had an answer at every turn. The Monarchs took the game by a final of 77-65.
Game Notes
> Holmes set a Temple career-high in points with 12. She last topped this on 3/4/21 when she was attending Norfolk State.
> This game was a homecoming for Clinton, who hails from Virginia Beach. Clinton put up 10 points.
> Piper put out a well-rounded performance, with eight points, six rebounds, and four steals.
> Temple had an elite performance from the foul stripe. The Owls shot 20-22 in free throws.
