Women’s Basketball Comes Homes for Doubleheader against UMBC

12.2.22 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA – The Temple women's basketball team (2-5, 0-0 AAC) returns home this Saturday after its longest road stretch of the season. The Owls will host the UMBC Retrievers (2-4, 0-0 America East) as the second half of a doubleheader with the men's team. The game will tip-off approximately 40 minutes after the conclusion of the men's game.

LAST TIME OUT: Temple 65, @ Old Dominion 77
> The Owls fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 77-65.
> Temple trailed nearly the whole game but came as close as three points midway through the third quarter. The Monarchs began the fourth on an 11-0 run and never looked back.
> Jalynn Holmes set a Temple career-high in points with 12, while Ines Piper had a well-rounded performance with eight points, six rebounds, and four steals. Her steals set a season-high for any Owl.

THE OWLS
> This season has featured an exceptionally challenging schedule thus far. The Owls have faced the 19th hardest schedule in country based on the RPI. This past month was the first time Temple has faced two ranked opponents in November since 2010.
> Aleah Nelson has continued to impress for Temple. For the second straight week, Nelson is leading the American in points per game (16.3). Despite only passing for two assists against ODU, she continues to rank second in the conference in assists per contest (5.3). The point guard ranks top ten in the American in 12 different statistical categories.
> Tiarra East leads the team in rebounds (5.9) and free throw percentage (>2 attempts) with .800. She and Jasha Clinton are tied for second on the team in minutes (199).
> Tarriyonna Gary is one of the best three-point shooters in the AAC. She ranks third in the American with a .472 three-point percentage.

SCOUTING UMBC
> UMBC had a 2021-22 season to forgot. The Retrievers went 3-23 and finished 343 out of 356 teams in the NET ranking.
> The team looks improved thus far in the season. UMBC is 2-4 with one win over D3 Gettysburg and a road victory over St. Francis Brooklyn. The Retrievers are in the midst of a road heavy stretch of the schedule where six of seven games are being played away from Baltimore.
> Graduate transfer forward Kiara Bell is an impact player for UMBC. Bell arrives in Baltimore after spending the last four years at LIU. She ranks second on the team in scoring with 10.2 and first in rebounds (8.3).
> Johnetta Hayes leads the Retrievers in her fourth season. Hayes spent six seasons at Texas Southern before moving over to UMBC. The former SWAC Coach of the Year has a 132-123 career record and is 17-51 in her four seasons with the program.

 SERIES HISTORY
> Despite being located only 100 or so miles apart, Temple and UMBC have only met twice on the hardwood for a home-and-home series in the 1990s.
> The Owls lost the first matchup in 1994 by a score of 41-37, but took the second in '95 38-36.

UP NEXT
> Temple will play its second home game in just three days as the Cherry & White face Big 5 rival La Salle. The 7 p.m. matchup will stream on ESPN+. Tickets are available for purchase here.
