No. 24 Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker in BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals

NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 24 Temple field hockey team dropped a heartbreaker in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals Friday afternoon, falling 4-3 to No. 13 Old Dominion in the shootout. Nienke Oerlemans and Tess Muller were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Recapping the Game
> Neither team was able to get much offense going in the first quarter, with the Monarchs firing the only two shots of the period on a pair of penalty corners.
> Temple fared better in the second quarter, firing one shot on three penalty corners, but neither team could find the back of the cage and the game was scoreless heading into halftime.
> ODU looked to score first with a penalty stroke, but Marlon de Bruijne's attempt hit the post.
> The Owls got on the board first, with Caitlyn Amsden redirecting a pass from Tess Muller at the 38-minute mark.
> Freshman Peyton Rieger put Temple up 2-0, scoring on a rebound less than five minutes later.Â
> The Monarchs converted a penalty corner at the end of the third frame to put the score at 2-1 heading into the final 15 minutes.
> Old Dominion scored a pair of goal to go ahead 3-2, but Rieger's second of the day knotted the game and forced an overtime situation.
> Both teams fought to find the golden goal, but neither could convert. ODU topped the Owls in the shootout, 4-3.
