Women's Basketball Downs SMU in Wednesday Night Rematch

DALLAS – The Temple women's basketball team (13-14, 8-8 AAC) defeated the SMU Mustangs (13-13, 7-7) in its regular season finale to snap a four-game skid to clinch a first-round bye in next week's American Athletic Conference Tournament. Up by one point with just over two minutes to play, freshman guard Aniya Gourdine connected on a three-pointer to give the Owls a two-possession lead. From there, Temple was able to hold on for a 56-48 win.

> Gourdine: 13 points, five rebounds, four assists
> Emani Mayo: seven points, four rebounds
First Quarter: Temple 17, SMU 7
> The Owls began the game on a hot start thanks to five early points from Davis including a three-pointer. Throughout the quarter, Davis scored nine points for TU.
> Temple's defense clamped down on the Mustangs in the quarter, holding SMU to only seven points.
> Buckets from forwards Shantay Taylor and Alexa Williamson added to the lead.
Second Quarter: Temple 29, SMU 19
> The second quarter featured a dead 12-12 period as neither team scored more than four unanswered points.
> Gourdine hit a long step back two-point basket in the opening minute of the quarter.

Third Quarter: Temple 42, SMU 42
> The Mustangs came out firing in the second half, opening on a 10-2 run in the first four minutes.
> Mayo ended the run with a three-pointer from the corner before SMU's Sydne Wiggins responded with a similar bucket of her own.
> A back-and-forth last few minutes of the quarter knotted things up heading into the final period.
Fourth Quarter: Temple 56, SMU 48
> The Mustangs came out of the gates on a 6-2 run, but the success for SMU would end there as SMU would not score for the final six minutes of the contest.
> The Owls defense found its first quarter form, holding the Mustangs to only six points throughout the quarter.
> Up by one point with 1:37 to play in the game, Gourdine nailed a three-pointer with the shot clock running down to give the Owls the advantage for the rest of the contest.
