Lacrosse Prepares to Face No. 5 Syracuse

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple lacrosse team (7-3) heads north Saturday to face a top five opponent in the fifth ranked Syracuse Orange. Syracuse is the highest ranked regular season opponent Temple has faced since No. 2 Florida in 2016.
LAST TIME OUT
> Temple won its second straight with a 13-10 win over the Monmouth Hawks.
> After a slow start which saw Temple fall behind 5-1 early in the second quarter, the Owls exploded for their most dominant stretch of the season. Temple scored seven unanswered to end the first half with an 8-5 lead.
> The two sides traded goals in the second half, with Temple stretching the lead to as much as five goals and Monmouth never coming closer than two.
> Seven different Owls found the back of the net. Katie Shallow had perhaps the best game of her career. She picked up a career-high seven ground balls, caused a season-high five turnovers, and controlled a career-high six draws.
SCOUTING TEMPLEÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
> Belle Mastropietro has been among the nation's best all-around players this season. The AAC Preseason Midfielder of the Year was named to the Tewaaraton Watchlist last week, recognizing her as being in contention for the "Heisman of lacrosse." Mastropietro is currently ranked 18th nationally in goals (32) and is tied for 16th in points (44). She also leads the American Athletic Conference in draw controls by a wide margin and has been honored by the American five times in the last seven weeks with Weekly awards.
> Quinn Nicolai also has been a player near the top of the national leader boards. The graduate transfer ranks 22nd in the nation in points (41) and is 15th in goals (33).
> Mackenzie Roth is one of the best passers in women's lacrosse. Her 23 assists place her at eighth nationally. She is currently tracking to have one of the best single seasons in Temple history in terms of assists. Roth is currently three short of entering the top ten for single-season assists. Roth also scored a hat-trick last game against Monmouth and tied her career-high with three ground balls.
> Katie Shallow is building a case as the best defender in the AAC. She currently leads the conference in both ground balls (2.5) and caused turnovers (2.0).

SCOUTING SYRACUSE
> Syracuse is one of the premier programs in women's lacrosse. The Orange have one of the best winning percentages in Division I. They have made eight Final Fours in the last 14 seasons, including last year where they concluded their campaign as the national runner-up.
> Syracuse is 7-2 thus far in the 2022 campaign. Eight of the nine opponents the Orange have faced this season were ranked. Syracuse's wins have included No. 4 Stoney Brook and No. 7 Duke.
> The Orange are led by Kayla Treanor in her first season on the sidelines. She takes over for Syracuse legend Gary Gait who departed the program to lead the 'Cuse men's team. Treanor was a four-time All-American while playing for the Orange, she ranks seventh all-time on the NCAA scoring list. As a coach, she spent the last four seasons working as an assistant at Boston College. Treanor is one of the youngest coaches at the Division I level at just 28 years old.
> The Orange have no shortage of star power on the field. Attacker Meaghan Tyrrell was a first-team All-America selection in 2021. She leads Syracuse this season with 33 goals. Emily Hawryschuk is a sixth-year student who is a two time All-American. Hawryschuk has scored 27 goals this season and has passed for 10 assists. Katelyn Mashewske and Emma Tyrrell are two of the best draw takers in the nation. Both have controlled over 50 draws this season, allowing the Orange to dominate possession and control games. Â
