Crew Looks to Build on Success in 2022

3.4.22 | Men's Crew

PHILADELPHIA -- After a long fall and winter season with competitive fall races, the 2022 Temple men's crew team will finally get back on the water for its first competition this Saturday with a scrimmage against Virginia. The exhibition with the Cavaliers is on the return leg of Temple's spring break training trip to Clemson, S.C.

"We are really excited about this group of men this year", said head coach Brian Perkins. "The team is starting to realize their speed this year and we are on aim to repeat last year's erg team."

The Owls look to follow up a successful 2021 season which included its first-ever Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta's Men's Points Trophy. Last season at the Dad Vail Regatta the Owls earned six medals, including three gold, in its nine entries to secure the title.

Temple's season schedule looks different from years past but was built with a nice mix of races. The Owls are back on the water and ready to test their new speeds against a national-caliber schedule.

"Here at Temple, we believe in excellence in all things", said Perkins. The Temple Crew team has high goals and expectations in the classroom, on the water, and in the erg room. Temple has a young squad this season and Perkins would describe this group as having "youthful energy." Helping to guide the young team will be senior Cameron Norton and junior captain Kenneth Raynor.

"We have set out to create an environment with good communication and trust between everyone on the team", said Raynor. "I've seen guys on the team step up into more leadership sort of roles this year. We're trying to guide the team where we do things differently this year. I think the team has handled the changes from previous years pretty well so far."

"We have a young group of guys this year", said Norton. "A lot of guys that are going to be returning next year are currently in our top two eights. It's the future of Temple Crew that I'm proud to be leaving when I graduate in their hands. Coach Perkins always says leave Temple Crew better than you found it and I think we have good group of guys that can do that."

Norton and Raynor are both excited to race top tier competition. "If we want to go to the next level, we have to measure ourselves against top crews", said Norton. Raynor is looking forward to racing Philly schools this season. "We had some good races with them (Philly schools) last year, so we have a good comparison to way up this this year's team against last years" said Raynor.

Now, after a long winter of training indoors, the Owls are back on the water and ready to test their new speeds against a national-caliber schedule. Temple will be on the Schuylkill for six races this season, but the Owls have found top competition up and down the coast.

Temple kicks off the season on Saturday, March 5 with a scrimmage against UVA.
