Women’s Varsity Eight Named AAC Boat of the Week

PHILADELPHIA -- After a fast weekend of racing, Temple women's rowing's Varsity 8 claimed American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week honors on Wednesday, April 6th.
The Owls' top boat took home the Murphy Cup at the 39th Murphy Cup. Members of the boat included coxswain, senior Lauren Phongphachone, stroked by freshman Gemma Wollenschlaeger. Seven seat was sophomore Rose Biddulph, followed by senior Emma Spaeth (six seat), sophomore Maggie Page (five seat), junior Riley Hackett (four seat), senior Nadia Bangura (three seat), senior Elaine Tierney (two seat), and freshman Niamh Kiely in bow.
The Owls' Varsity 8 won the Murphy Cup for the first time since 1995. The crew defeated Georgetown by .32 seconds to cap racing at the 39th Memorial Murphy Cup Regatta on Saturday, April 2 on the Schuylkill River. The Owls advanced to the finals with a win in the heats, clocking in at 6:24.49, ahead of a five-team field. In the finals, Temple won a tight race in a time of 6:23.68, defeating Georgetown, UMass, Saint Joseph's, Delaware, and Old Dominion.
